2004 Cadillac CTS 3.6- Won't stay running after fueling up and idles rough

My girlfriend has a 2004 Cadillac CTS 3.6. It has been idling a little rough from time to time, but not very noticeable. Recently, the last 5 or 6 times fueling up, the car will start for a second and then immediately die. I have to start it multiple times before it will stay running. The other option that seems to work is to rev the engine to around 2000rpm immediately after starting in order to keep it running. After about 20 seconds of that, it will stay running.

Even more recently, the car died when she was turning into a parking lot. I had to do the same thing as when fueling- rev the engine for a few seconds until it would idle on its own. I jumped in the car and tried driving it myself because I has NEVER died like this while driving. I noticed that as I slowed down (10-15mph or so..) and the RPMs dropped and the tranny was downshifting, the car acted like it wanted to die every time it downshifted. This is probably the same issue that is causing the rough idle.

Any thoughts? I thought I had this figured out when she told me about the fueling up problem, but now she tells me its been idling rough for a while. Then the car dies as she's slowly turning into the parking lot. A lot of forums said the EVAP system has a canister vent valve that can freeze up and cause the car to stall after fueling. Now that I know about the idle issues and the car dieing we she's slowing/driving slow, I don't know what to think. According to her, the check engine light has come on in the past, but it has since turned off. Places like Auto Zone need the light to be active in order to read the codes.

    Thanks for your suggestions.

    -Chris

It's quite possible that you're experiencing the evap-purge solenoid problem since it is following fill-ups. Luckily it's not a particularly difficult fix. Here are a couple threads which might be helpful:
