2006 3.8 oil leak from filter cap

first post, great site. After changing oil, it now leaks from the threaded oil filter cap. Torque is correct. The o-ring above the threads looks fine, but should that be replaced after every oil change (it was not included with the new filter)? The store only had an STP filter. Or could the issue be that oil was perhaps not fully drained so it was over filled, causing high pressure/leakage? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I replace the o ring everytime and it is typically included with the filters I purchase. There shoulf be a small oring for the bolt and a larger oring for the cap fot my 03

    ----------

I also replace the oil pan bolt just about every oil change as well with a new gasket on that. Theyre so cheap I don't see a reason not to.

O-Ring should definitely be replaced with every oil change. I worked at a Walmart as an oil changer and I've seen the effects of not changing the o-ring first hand on a Mercedes that came in with oil all over the place . We popped the hood and found it leaking around the filter housing. Changed the oil, filter and o-ring and it stopped leaking.

The heat and force on the o-ring flattens them out and they don't fill the gap like they are meant to once they are removed. Take the old one out and take a look. I would be willing to bet it looks more like a triangle ring.

Good luck in finding an o-ring with the filters.

I have two cars that require the same style filter. In the last 6 to 8 years owning these cars and having 20 plus oil changes. Only ONE filter came with the o-ring.

Get an ACDelco PF2129 filter from Amazon - Comes with a ring and is a great filter and at $7 you can order a few at once and always have one on hand.

I was agreeing with you ( Pontiac and Buick ENGINE ).

I was trying to be funny like I thought you were about his type O but you must think he was serious about the 3.8.
