OK, I'm willing to do the dyno runs at FAST Specialties. They've agreed to discount me some dyno time on a slow day. I'll put my stock air intake back in to baseline. I'll do multiple runs for each modification and post the dyno sheets. That way the tests will all be on the same car, on the same dyno, on the same day, on the same fuel. I'm not, however going to cut up my stock airbox or buy a K&N kit. So if you True Believers out there want a real comparative test someone needs to send me the parts. I'll pay the freight on any part back to the owner.
Any takers? Time to put up or......
After HaveBlue get's his dyno runs in the next few weeks, then the pressure will REALLY be on to get my runs done for the 3.2L. I'll have to force a day off to get to the dyno. The cool thing is that we've arranged to test the exact same airboxes (shipping them both ways across the country) on both cars. That way there's no test error due to who drilled how many holes and where.
BTW, for any naysayers, HaveBlue REALLY knows what he's talking about, when it comes to cars and mods. He's got my total respect. He can't really say much on an open forum, due to his job responsibilities, but he has access to all the big boy manufacturers. He's a valuable asset to the forum. I'm very glad he took the time to meet me for lunch and talk shop.
I've finished the TonyA on my car and cant wait to see ody's result so I can put some numbers to the difference I've been feeling!!! Plus I'd love it if the "ghetto rig" beats the $$$ intakes.

Guess we just gotta wait and see...I'm puttin' my money on the Volant....but I ain't mad at ya for going with the TonyA...save your money for dental school!!
That reminds me, I gotta make an appointment to Dyno my CTS, with Volant, V-Exhaust and Magnaflow.....:alchi:
my money is on the volant also...watch--it's gonna be the k&n...maybe i should wait until we dyno to sell it...use it as a selling point if it pulls out ahead...

Guys
I have been watching this for quite a while and thought that its about time to say something. My intake was the only one that opened the outside air in the lower grille.
This can be used for all the intakes and that cooler outside air will definitely help the Volant and the K&N units. They didn't do that on their units but you guys can and it will reduce the air temp to the air flow sensor. Beside the decreased air restriction, the biggest help is the cooler air.
Two things you can do if you need more performance:
If you want to get less restriction with my intake just use a larger Air Hog filter as there is plenty of room on the baffle plate. That will give you MORE air flow with less restriction for the SAME price. I think you will enjoy the extra time working on your car etc.
Second, close the area off between the engine heat and the air intake with flexible rubber sheeting. This will assure that your intake air is the closest to the outside air at all times.

Thanks for developing this mod for all of us who are too poor/cheap to buy units like the Volant or the K&N. RobertCTS and myself have both been looking into improving it further by adding a hose that would route air directly from the lower grill into the box, thus completely eliminating hot engine air plus potentially generating a true "ram-air" effect at speed. Have you looked into this sort of thing as well? We'll let you know how it turns out, and I'm betting 3 happy meals the TonyA whomps the Volant and the K&N!!!
i used your intake for a few weeks and definitely though it was well worth the money. if i hadn't found the volant for a really good new used price i would probably still have the tonya mod in.
now, i can't really see how the volant doesn't do the same...the irregularly shaped "scoop" on the volant goes right through to the right side of the grill and takes cold air from the front of the car (after you cut a small hole in that thin mesh lining). isn't that right? with the tonya, there was just the large hole in the front that opened up to the back of the headlight assembly...am i wrong in that? i think the volant gets it's far share of cold are as well. as for the k&n, well that all hot engine air...

Just out of curiosity, does anyone have a picture of this "scoop" on the Volant and where it goes? I've never had the chance to look at one up close so its got me intrigued.
Sweet man, thanks! Only now that I see it, I'm starting to second guess my bet...but I think the TonyA will still beat the K&N. If it doesnt, I'm claiming experimenter bias!!!

Haha, experimenter bias? The K&N was my kit that I volunteered for the test, and I've even got it to come behind the Volant and TonyA...says something about the quality of the kit. On that note, the results should be coming out soon for the 3.6L. Can't wait.
I had it written down at one time. From memory: my '03 sport wheels (17") with 225/50R17's filled to 32psi were 42 lbs each. The 18" x 8" Mille Miglias with 245/45R18's also at 32 psi were 51 lbs each. This was on a bathroom scale that I brought out to the garage. I'm curious to see the gains of the Tonya/Volant vs. any losses due to bigger wheels on the dyno.
I also weighed my 14" Brembo two-piece rotors and calipers. I'll weigh the stockers when I do the swap to see which is heavier.
Devil, where are you at in NoVA? I'm in Dulles/Sterling/Leesburg area three days a week.
OK All,
I've got all the kits, (thanks to Krank & Ody). The dyno day is scheduled for this Thursday the 20th at 10:00am Pacific Time.
Let the Games Begin!
