POP is a very fast signal - Less than 1/15th of a second. Most detectors sold over a year ago will not see it and many of todays cheaper detectors will not.
At minimum get a unit that supports POP detection. Depending on your driving habits and the time of day that you drive will distinguish what type of detector you need. If you drive at night and there are not many cars on the road and there are gaps beteen cars of a mile or more you will want to stay away from a cheaper detectors.
Since instant on is very popular you want the car in front of you to set off the gun. Even the cheapest detectors should give you a few mile range so if there are always cars on the road with you, You dont need the most expensive detector.
In the $150 range about the best unit you can get would be a Cobra 9700 or a Whistler Pro73.
$300 plus would be the Beltonics RX65, Escort 8500 x50 and the V1. They are all very sensitive and can give you a tremendous range up to 13 miles on a straight away. The V1 is the highest priced unit at $400 and it adds arrows to tell you if the signal is coming from the front, side or back. Not worth $100 more in my opinion but either of these are on par with each other as far as functionality.
If you want specific information let me know what you are looking for since I have tons of documents on Radar & Laser.
BTW - Passive jammers dont work and the few regular jammers that do work are very illegal since they broadcast out a signal which is against FCC regulations. It is also very easy for a cop to pinpoint anyone that is using an illegal jammer and the fines are very high. (way more expensive than a ticket) |

What is the X for? Sometimes I see KA Alert but I dont see any cops same with K Alert. Can you briefly descrive what each Alert is for Thanks?

Also everytime I go to Vons the KA Alert goes off in the parking lot I am sure there is not a cop there every single time I go to Vons. |

It got me out of a few tickets and saved my ass from getting a 95+mph ticket (I still got the ticket, but I was able to slow down to like ~70 thanks to the radar). It has the front/rear 360 detection and is 4 years old. . . got it for 50 bucks. |

This will explain the different bands. Unfortunately many of the automatic door openers in supermarkets etc. use the same frequencies to detect movement so the doors can open automatically for you. X Band is the oldest technology but it is still widely used and you should not turn it off unless you are sure its not used in your area.
When on the highway your detector should not have any bands turned off. Detectors have a city and highway mode and the city mode should reduce the sensitivity on the X-Band so you dont get that many false alerts.
POP is the new kid on the block. POP Mode is a normal K or Ka band radar signal which travels from the radar gun to a target and back in less than a 1/15th of a second. Most radar detectors manufactured over 2 years ago and most of the cheaper units do not offer protection against this. |

I hard wired it up by the mirror. From the outside of the car you can't see it due to the tinting.
The Cobra is highly programmable to meet personal needs. I agree..$400 for a Valentine is a bit to rich. |

It's my third one and I wouldn't have anything else. I can't stand wires and don't want to hard wire one 'cause I take it down immediately if I'm ever stopped. A cop will write you for sure if they see any signs of a detector, believe me. My son just had an $800 system put in his GT. Has front and rear sensors wired in and is a very nice unit. Extremely sensitive though. No detector will prevent a laser zap however........don't believe anyone who tells you different.
