hi everyone. my wife called me from and said the car is making crazy noise and having white smoke. she stopped right away . so i went there and first looked under the car and saw right away the remains of a partial belt. opened the hood and saw this. what the hell. is the idler pulley melted? tell me what you think and if you have the part names and numbers etc. i have a 2003 cts 3.2l lux package. let me know soon as you can. thank you all of you sleuths of the board

If I would have to assume something , it's that the idler pulley seized, forcing the belt to rub on it instead of roll on it, you can figure out easily a belt rubbing on a surface wouldn't take long to melt up on that friction surface.

If I were you I would go on RockAuto.com (don't forget our %5 discount) look for replacement for all the pulley's on this car and also replace the stock belts with Good year gatorback belts since it would be a good idea probably (granted the bellts are still the stock ones.

That would be the tensioner not idler. I replaced mine last year when the bearing started making noise.

Ok done. about 15 minutes total. a tip is to let belt in hot sun first maybe make it easier to maneuver. This was actually easier than changing a light bulb. I was going to post a how to but it is already done.
