I would recommend taking them off the car BEFORE spraying. Taking them off is not that hard of a process and it will prevent you from hitting the car, no matter how much you tape you could hit your car (unless you tape up the whole rear end which is a waste of time). Plus removing them will give you better coverage and the ability to do prevent running of the nightshade from overspray. Some unsolicited advice, go slow, paint/tinting is one of those things that is best done with a measure of patience. Other than that Welcome to the Forum and Good Luck!
I covered off the rear pretty good. I didnt sand but the look still came out pretty nice. I did about 6 coats. The tint is enough to notice but not enough for a cop to care.
6 coats is a lot, that stuff dries darker than it looks wet. I did 3 coats of vht on all lights except the headlights. I originally tinted headlights with 2 coats and it drastically decreased my light ouput at night so I removed the vht and restored the headlights. As long as your state isn't really picky or have inspections anually you'll be good as far as getting pulled over. If you can see the lights light up during daytime your in clear.
Pull the brake lights off. Its 2 10mm for the tail lights if I recall, and 8 10mm deep socket for the actual trunk bezel. Then you can mask off the 3rd brake light on the trunk bezel and won't have to worry about overspray on the actual car.
