Help guys. I need to solve this loud whining noise on my 04 CTS 3.6L. The whine noise increases. with Rpm's and decreases . Also it sounds like a bad bearing but also heard of timing chains wear out, which I hope this isn't the case. Thanks for falls input.
I'm not an expert on the tiki g chain sound, but that seems like it might be a bad pulley wheel. Like maybe the tensioner or something. For starters, get a can of WD-40 of something and get in there and spray the back (bearings) of all the pulleys. If the noise lessens or goes away for a short time.....bingo. If it is still there then it may be the timing chain!
Yeah, I start by taking the air intake out of the way then remove the belts so you can get a good look. Use your hands to move/ spin everything you can get your hands on. Look for brown, reddish or black dust that's a good clue too.
Confirmed, I sprayed the rear of all the bearings and bam the noise went away for a while but soon came back. Only problem is that i didnt do one at a time but at least i now know its just a bearing problem but to me sounds like the harmonic balancer. It's not loose just noisy.
Okay so today I removed belts, spun all bearings and no noise but removed lower idler pulley and noticed two metal plates one in front and behind pulley removed them both and ding noise gone and sounds normal. My suggestions was those two plates/spacers were rubbing against pulley and at high rpm the noise got louder etc.
