Angry Notorious Cadillac Electrical Gremlins :-| Help please

I've got a 2007 CTS with ~89,000 miles and recently started having issues with it, which seem to be rapidly escalating...

A week or two ago, I started having issues with the car running horribly, refusing to start, and even the starter getting 'stuck' to where it would act like I was actively trying to crank the car. This only happened after a fillup with gas, and would go away shortly after. I attributed this to the EVAP purge valve - no big deal.

More recently, I started having a ton of other electrical problems (all of these started simultaneously):
Power steering stops working to a large extent, A/C doesn't blow cold, Traction Control light comes on and stays on, Security / Theft light comes on and stays on, cruise control works only intermittently, and today the car even decided to lock me out when I closed the doors while it was still running (shortly after, the doors unlocked). Additionally, the fuel gauge does not work at times, and the temp gauge doesn't work at times either.

I had the OBD powertrain codes read, and had a few misfire codes (P0301, P0300, P0302), an EVAP system code (P0496), and "Engine Position System Performance (Bank 1)" (P0008). I attempted to get OnStar to pull my OBD codes, hoping they could get more than just the Powertrain "P" codes, but even OnStar is acting up. Specifically, the LED on the rearview mirror which is supposed to flash green was flashing red, which they claimed was a communication issue, and this kept me from being able to get those OBD codes. I'm attributing this to all of the other electrical issues I'm having.

Has anyone had issues similar to this, or can anyone give me input on where I should start looking?

    DSF,

I have had some of the same issues as you (I have a 2007 CTS, with the same mileage). For a month or so my Traction Control and ABS lights would come on quite often. I assumed this was due to a bad wheel speed sensor.

This morning on my way in to work, the radio shut down, the cruise turned off, fuel and temp gauges stopped working, airbag, brake and security lights all came on. Radio reset (no presets were remembered), and would not work.

I pulled over on the next exit and turned the car off. After starting it up, it went back to "normal", just the TC and ABS lights on, and radio presets were working again.

I would also be interested in any information about what could be causing this.

    Thanks!

Well, I just got the OBD codes pulled (not just the powertrain codes)...

There were literally 15-20 codes thrown. The mechanic explained one issue to me as the BCM (Body Control Module) has completely lost communication with the PCM (Powertrain Control Module).

    Great :-/

Re: Notorious Cadillac Electrical Gremlins :-| Help please

He said he wouldn't even touch it :-| It was beyond his capability...

All he could say was 'Biiiig problems'

Diagnostics at the dealership are $85/hour... Crazy

I'm reading up on some stuff, and someone said on Corvettes, if the A/C drain box gets clogged and water leaks on the carpet, it can wet the BCM and ruin it. I had the A/C drain problem, so I'm wondering if the BCM is located in about the same spot on our Cadillacs... May have something to do with my problem.

I'm going to pull all the fuses under the hood a bit later and check them just for the hell of it, but I'm not optimistic.

I will definitely keep you posted, and please let me know if you find anything out as well.

Here's to hoping both of our problems are easily solved.

Ok just had the same exact thing happen to my cts 05 130k miles 3.6l. Started doing exactly what yours was doing so I wemt to the Cadillac dealer the same day, if your service thief system comes on than you will have to replace the ecm, I paid 75 bucjs at the dealer to diagnosed it and paid 669 dollars plus tax to get a new ecm and have them install it and program it. From talking to the cadi techs this is a very common problem on the first gen cts' s he told me his day consist of him replacing the ecm in our model cars , but after I got a new one she runs like she has 0 miles and is brand new so im happy!

Re: Notorious Cadillac Electrical Gremlins :-| Help please

djkdawg, thanks for the info... I definitely appreciate it

    HOWEVER...

I think I just 'fixed' the electrical problems (or so I'm hoping)...

Innova133, you might want to try this... It's a long shot, but I'm crossing my fingers that it helps you.

Ok so, I decided to check the fuse box under the hood for any blown fuses... Pulled any fuses that were marked ECM or PCM (or similar), checked them, and replaced them. None blown.
While I had the box open, I went ahead and made sure all of the wiring harnesses were plugged in real tight.

Started the car up, and every single light / problem was gone... It seemed too good to be true.

Drove the car ~15 miles, started / stopped it 6 times, got gas, etc. I still had the issue I've been having when I get gas (EVAP purge valve or charcoal canister is bad, which is what all of the "P" diagnostic codes were for, as well as why my check engine light was on.)
Started the car after I got gas, and it took a lot longer to start than it usually does when I'm having the problem. I attributed this to the car not being in "limp mode" anymore, as the CEL was off.

I was expecting the CEL to come back on, as I was pretty sure the EVAP purge valve / canister really was bad... Lo and behold, it did - after the 6th start or so. As I said, I was expecting that (as all of my powertrain codes, which IIRC are the ones which trip the CEL, were related to the EVAP system).

However, the electrical issues never started back up. My A/C is working, my gauges are working, my instrument cluster lights are all normal (except for the CEL of course), etc. I'm still thinking it's too good to be true, but everything is working flawlessly, which is a far cry from just a few hours ago even.

I'm thinking what happened is this:

Because of the EVAP system problem, when I start my car after getting gas, it runs horribly. Kills for the first few starts, then has a HORRIBLY rough idle. The first time I had this issue (a week and a half or so ago), the idle was so rough that it disconnected my brake booster hose (causing me to get on the road then realize I had zero brake pressure) as well as another vacuum hose.

At the same time I had those issues initially, I had something electrical under my hood happen, causing smoke to come out from under the hood... There were no electrical issues right away, and I couldn't find any burn marks or melted wires, so I brushed it off.
Soon after that is when the electrical problems started. They've been intermittent; I will have issues 99% of the time, then randomly, my A/C and gauges would start working for a minute or so.

I'm thinking (hoping?) that the cause was a harness which was loosened up by the violent shaking of the motor. This could explain the smoke, as well as why the problems are intermittent. I'm guessing one of the fuses I pulled 'reset' the ECM/PCM/BCM/whatever, which would explain the check engine light turning off. That, in combination with the harness being plugged in more securely, must have remedied everything.
Alternatively, the harnesses could have been a non-issue, and maybe the modules just needed a 'reset' after the short or whatever caused the smoke.

Either way, I'm not getting my hopes up too much, but everything looks fine now (save for the EVAP system problems, which is minor anyway). I'm keeping my fingers crossed... If this fixes it, I'm extremely glad it was such a minor cause, and I'm even more elated that I actually bothered to mess with the fuse box under the hood as it may have just saved me $1-2k.

Thanks DSF. I only had the issue happen for the first time today and turning the car on/off seemed to fix it. I'm going to see if it happens again/how often. I will definitely keep this thread saved for future reference if I need it hought!
