Check Oil religiously. At least until you learn the habits of your engine.

    Re: 2005 cts!

There's an issue with timing chains stretching on some model years with the 3.6L engine, too. It's very important that the chain gets replaced (it's covered under an extended warranty for this issue) if your car is
affected and it hasn't been done already. GM will have a record of it having been done. Check your local dealership and ask them to see if it's been done to your car.

Failure to address this issue in a timely fashion can lead to a trashed engine. It is extremely important to check on this issue.

Watch the oil level. The 3.6 is a known oil burner. Some burn more than others.

Don't wait for your car to tell you when to change oil. A rational oil change interval for a CTS is really 3 to 5 thousand miles. The DIC seems to think it's about 10K, which is absurd.

I am pretty sure the timing chain is only covered by the dealer on the 2007 model year. The other years you are SOL and need to take care of it yourself. Someone correct me if I am wrong tho!!!

Clarification on that extended warranty/[TSB?] would be great.

Well I have the extended warranty 2yrs/24k miles.. I planned on getting all up close and personal with her this weekend. I'll check on the timing chain, I don't even know what size engine I have. I'm just happy to be working and have a car! It's been a long year.. thanks guys!

    Re: 2005 cts!

most of the timing chain issues arise from the engine running for extended periods of time while low on oil

so as mentioned earlier, make sure you check your oil level regularly until you get a sense for how much it consumes (if it consumes)

shortening your oil change intervals only helps you mitigate the oil level issue if you never check your oil level

the oil life monitor can be trusted to tell you how much your oil has degraded (but not what the level is) so as long as you're keeping the level correct you can change your oil by the monitor

also, your engine requires oil that meets GM spec GM6904M (that's what your owners manual will say)
GM4718M supercedes/replaces the GM6904M spec and can also be used
GM's new Dexos1 spec replaces both and can also be used

Dexos oils will have the Dexos logo on them and on the back of the bottles they will list all the various specs that the oils meet
you will usually see all three of those on a bottle of Mobil1 (for instance)

your oil life monitor expects and calculates for an oil that meets or exceeds the spec
so if you use regular oil the oil life monitor will not know that and your oil will be degrading much faster than the monitor shows

Sweet.. So I found out I have a 3.6 VVT. I think it was in an accisdent because the headlight on the pass side is new. And there's a message on the rear view that says the passenger side airbag is off.. maybe because it was activated? Hope i dont end up with the used caddy blues! Pics tommorow.

    Re: 2005 cts!

CTS has a passenger presence system that senses if someone is in the front passenger seat

there was a recall for the sensor in the seat cushion

check w/ your dealer to see if it has been done yet
if it hasn't that could be causing that light

    ...

or it could have been in a wreck

    or both
