    Starter Grinding on start

My 2005 CTS 3.6, recently started having an intermittent problem at start. Once in a while when turning the key to start, the starter grinds and then stops and engine does not start. It then grinds again and stops. This will continue to repeat until the key is turned completely off. Once the key is turned off, starting seems to work fine.

Sounds like the starter gear drive isn't fully engaging. More likely than anything you need a new starter.

    Re: Starter Grinding on start

pinion gear has to much play in its bearing and its wobbling about possibly worth taking the starter off and checking the pinion shaft, if it wobbles you need a new starter.
