    Need help ASAP: OBD scan tool apparently disabled alternator

    Good morning

    I just purchased a 2003 cts and when driving home with it the check engine light came on. Checked the codes using my trust worthy reader which I used countless times on other cars. Now I was told by the shop I bought the car from that my scanner managed to disable my alternator and that the codes were erased but chk engine light was still on. Funny enough I checked it twice with the same result. I find that very hard to believe. Either way the codes pulled was knock circuit input low bank 1 sensor 1 and o2 sensor bank 2 sensor 2. Need help plz! At the moment they are only replacing the o2 sensor.

    If you had a Tech2 scanner that the dealership and factory uses I could see that as a possibility. Thing is, code scanners only read and erase codes, they don't modify settings, (well at least mine doesn't) Chances are that your alternator died on it's own, it just happened to be after you checked codes. Personally, and this is just my opinion, i think at worst someone just wants to sell you an alternator replacement. I'd recommend a second opinion before you start throwing parts at it.

    There is absolutely, positively no frickin' way an OBDII scan tool "disabled" the alternator!
