It's more than likely your power steering. Happens on most cars. My CTS does seem louder than most other cars I've had but no biggie. -43 F here this morning!! You think yours made noise when it started??? Lol

I heard mine do that today too. It was about 17*F out and I hadn't driven it for nearly 20 hours. For me it sounded like the starter, cus as soon as the engine was running on its own. The noise went away. I didn't dare try to restart again though. Honestly, I'm not worried about it at the moment. Cold weather does some strange stuff to cars.

Yep, had it happen to me the past couple days too. 99.9% sure its the Power Steering pump doing it. I've heard that exact same whine on a couple other cars i've owned and it's a pretty distinct sound. I wouldn't worry too much unless it does it in warm weather as well. Our fluids get pretty thick when it's -20C outside.

I had this same issue--would whine for a few seconds at startup after a cold night. It was the power steering pump. Did a good flush of the system and replacement with new (better) fluid a couple weeks ago, just before the deep freeze kicked in. It's definitely cleared up as this weather should have brought it back and then some.
