    muffler shake

Greetings all.. i have an 03 cts that seems to have a really bad right side muffler shake, enough that it shakes the the whole car when in gear and stopped at a light. this has created a high pitch squeak like metal rubbing against its self. i looked at the heat shield and it does not appear to be touching anything or to be damaged. im not throwing any sensors and have completely cleaned the air intake system. what would cause the shake and how do i stop it? its driving me nuts!

You may have a rubber hanger that broke and the exhaust could be rubbing on something. A mount or exhaust clamp may be loose somewhere. Take it to a muffler shop. Sounds like a quick easy fix!

You specified right side, so I'm assuming it has duals. '03 came with single , so go under & check where it was modified. Could be like Blayne said or a broken weld . Pretty hard to diagnose a problem over the web when we can't see the car.

Wouldn't a muffler shaking the whole car be kind of like the tail wagging the dog?

Well jack up the car, start it and get under there and grab it in some spots to see if it stops and take a good look around. You'll find it

My response was serious. I don't understand how a muffler could shake the whole car. I also don't understand how cleaning the whole air intake would have any effect on a shaking muffler, or why anyone would be throwing sensors.

With all that said, I recommend doing as Blayne suggested and getting under the car with it running so you can try to localize the noise. Otherwise we're just going to be guessing about what could be the cause.
