2005 3.6 valve spring broke, what the heck?

I was on my way home a couple of weeks ago and out of nowhere, car running perfectly, then like a snap, it started misfiring so bad that I could barely make it home.

No sensor codes to be found, but all cylinders where reporting misfires.

After checking the control system and finding no issues, my mechanic started checking for mechanical issues.

Bingo.... no compression in #5. Nothing, nada. He pulled off the valve covers and it was immediatly obvious that the valve spring had broken on #5.

Anyone heard of valve spring failures on a 3.6? I've been in and out of this forum quite a bit over the last 3 years, and this issue is not ringing a bell with me. I've heard plenty about timing chains, transmission oil cooling fittings, rear axles, but never valve springs.

Is this an isolated fault, or a more widespread issue with the 3.6?

First one I have seen and we work on these all the time, but ANY valve spring may break, even on a bone stock motor....it's just very rare.

Hopefully valve didnt drop and break the piston...if the valve is not bent it is a easy fix.

Valve was bent, but looks like it didn't hurt the piston.
Do you think this was a fluke, or could there have been an underlying cause. Hopefully this does not occur again.

With the valve being bent the head has to come off to replace the valve and have the head checked. I have seen several 3.6's with burnt valves in my shop but no broken springs.

Same here....never a broken spring so I imagine it was a material defect in the spring.

While apart, make sure they put the upgraded timing set on it.
