anyone changed the starter on an 03?

a couple of times over the past few weeks, i have a couple of starting problems. not like a CPS problem, i changed that a couple of years ago.
when i turn the key, the dash acts normal and all i get is clicking from the engine compartment. i drained the battery a few weeks ago and that was a different click. I am thinking it may be my starter on its way out. anyone ever changed one on an 03?
    Thanks

I've never changed one, but was checking it out at one time and it seems the exhaust is in the way, I think you have to drop the exhaust to get the starter out.

Jos, when the starter windings start to go, it will draw more and more electricity from the battery. The engine will turn slower and slower each time. Even a fully charged battery will give up its whole charge for one start at the very end of the starter.

Try the starter solenoid relay in the underhood fusebox. Its much cheaper and could be your problem.

That your battery went bad could have been because the starter is indeed going bad, or it could have just been at the end of its life.

i am guessing these relays are a simple "pull straight up and out" deal?

Re: anyone changed the starter on an 03?

If you didn't spray the receptacle with electronics cleaner you should unplug the relay and push it back in several times to clean the contacts. Being stuck means dirt was holding it back, plus you want a tight fit. In the future, remember that before you replace an electronic part, clean it first. That's usually all parts need, a good, clean contact. If cleaning doesn't work, then replace. I should have been more specific, I've worked on electronics so long I tend to assume too much about what other people know, sorry.

Re: anyone changed the starter on an 03?

well, i thought i would throw the playbook on the dash to see if i could catch a video of my problem. after the first start with no problems, i shut it off and tried again and it clicked as mentioned before. i uploaded the video to youtube and the link is below. WARNING.....the language at the first start-up, my apologies. now, with that being said and "a choice 4 letter word", on with the video

Re: anyone changed the starter on an 03?

I played it through my stereo. My car never made a noise like that. When my purge valve went I ran down the battery. First I got the diesel truck engine starting noise, then a gentle clicking. That sounds like a hammer banging on a steel girder.

Well, its acting like a bad starter. As I said before, at the end of its life, the windings are so shorted that it sucks the whole battery charge out for one start. A healthy battery will recover given enough time, and the starter will cool off, and then you'll get another start out of it. Sorry, but I've got to recommend the starter replacement. Maybe somebody knows something different...

i have felt like it was the starter going, but just wanted to make sure and get some other opinions. thanks for the suggestion on the relay. i hoped it would fix it, but was very skeptical.
