How to remove a broken oil filter cap/cover?

    Hey guys,

I was changing my oil today and when I went to unscrew the oil filter cover, the top bolt sheared straight off the housing cap.

So, how would I go about getting the damaged cover off so i can install the new one I have on order from GM? I have tried several different strap-tuype wrenches, oil filter sockets, pipe wrenches of various size, etc. Everything is either too big to rotate (pipe wrenches) or slides off the smooth and curved sides of the filter cap...

Something like that might be your best option. Autozone should have a cheaper alternative...
It clamps tighter as you loosen/rotate the ratchet.
That's a tough break, was it hot when you tried to remove it?

I would drill holes into the sides. But have a second person with you and a vacuum to suck up the shavings.

Yeah it was about 110 when I was trying to take it off....

Ill have to check Autozone and see if they have an equivalent tool.

Channel locks or a pipe wrench. And don't put the new one on so tight. The torque value is stamped right on it.
Pipe wrenches come in various sizes & are adjustable.

I think he means your engine/oil, never change cold oil.

Sorry, for the lack of information. It may then be possible to insert something to give you leverage. Hopefully you'll be able to go all the way to the other side to give you better leverage. Just something along those lines is what I was thinking.

Kind of like in the old days with a cartidge filter: drill a hole big enough for a large/long Philips screwdriver all the way through the filter and cap and through the other side. Insert screwdriver and turn counterclockwise. Clean out ALL the debris before refilling etc. By the way, did some commercial oil change outfit do this?

How did you end up resolving this?

I just did the same thing, cant get a channel locks or pipe wrench of any size to hold on.

Can you try to punch a hole instead of drill so no shavings fall in? Like us a small metal punch?

try a normal oil filter band wrench, or filter pliers.
if you use the pliers you can line up where the teeth are and put notches in the cap so you can get a grip

I would try filing some slots on the sides to give your wrench something to grip?

that is what 1st came to mind, and that is what i would do, the old one is ruined anyways so no point in buying more tools that won't work, when that would do it right away
