Actually, a hammer & centre punch could have been the answer.
Did he ever come back & tell how he resolved it ? Or even how he did that in the first place ?

Just got the bugger off. The hammer and punch method worked for me...about 3 minutes of good 'ol mid-evil impact maintenance did the trick.

thanks everyone...we're all in this together

Same problem yesterday. My solution was an old wood chisel and a claw hammer to turn the broken cap until I got it unseated. $55 for the new cap from the local dealer. Hope this one holds up better

What are you guys torqueing these things to ?
I believe the proper value is stamped right on it. I have never used a torque wrench on mine, just common sense, and never had a problem.

Re: How to remove a broken oil filter cap/cover?

Just happened to me. I have made all of the oil changes on my SRX since I bought it (22k miles now 66k miles) except for ONCE. This past time I had the dealership do it because my car was eating oil. They torqued the damn thing on so hard. My damage looks identical to the OPs. After close inspection of the bolt that broke off, the dealership obviously used an impact wrench when they did the oil change. I worked erecting steel for about a year and nothing makes marks on a bolt head quite like an impact wrench. Mine sheared off under normal pressure from an 8" socket wrench.

http://www.gmpartseast.com/Page_Prod...Code=6D1&Year= You are looking at item number 450 and the seal is 451. Still working on getting my cap off. No luck so far, punch and hammer, large pipe wrench and a little blood. All unsuccessful so far.

My last resort would be, (depending on the clearance on the side) I would drill a hole on the side of the broken oil cap and across (through the old oil filter), insert a hard metal rod through and twist. PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL I feel that the surface of metal oil cap is very slippery and you may end of damaging other things.

BTW what is the part number for the oil cap so I can order one for myself too.

Part number is 12583470. This is evidently a frequent occurrence as they are stocked local to me here in Omaha for $39, I did find them cheaper online but I do not have the luxury of waiting.

I have a filter remover that will really work on this: it's a gear-driven device that when attached to a 3/8" drive ratchet, tightens harder and harder as you turn it counterclockwise. I got it at Sears. I can't wait to use it on my own eventually-busted filter cap!

The filter cap will last indefinitely if you apply the rated torque to it. It's actually a very light touch.
