2005 Cadillac CTS burning oil, rattling noise, possible engine issue

I have a 2005 cadillac cts 3.6L with 74K miles on it. It is possibly burning oil. Last week it ran out of oil without any indication, I put 2-3 quarts in it, now it is running, but is making a ratlling noise till the engine is fully warmed up and it rattles/shakes during idling, stopping etc. I need a good mechanic who knows Cadillac Cts really well in santa ana orange county area. I would appreciate recommendations.

    Thanks,

    M.

Is your car leaking by any chance? mine is very slowly in the rear side, its barely noticeable. I believe it called a differential seal. That could be a possibility for the loss of oil.

This probably isn't what you want to read, but I'd bet that the timing chain and tensioners are shot on your car, and the cause of your rattly start up and rough idle...

I would say get it over to the dealership immediately and have them check out the timing chain and tensioners. If you put it off and the chain breaks your repair costs double. Mega spendy. Guys have been having these break with no warning other than the rattle and rough idle and in some cases low oil. I am in Orange County too. What dealership do you go to?

Re: 2005 Cadillac CTS burning oil, rattling noise, possible engine issue

The 3.2 still needs timing belt maintenance, but we weren't sold an engine that "never needs timing belt replacement". I'll have about 75k miles on my 3.2 in December, plan to change the belt then. But the belt looks a whole lot easier than the chain...

The OP ran it out of oil. That being the case, it's more likely rings, valves, pistons, etc. If it was driven for very long without oil the engine's probably toast.

Re: 2005 Cadillac CTS burning oil, rattling noise, possible engine issue

the timing belt is obviously easy to replace on the 3.2, its on the outside of the motor and cheap to replace. The timing belt needs replaced on all cars over time. But the timing chains are inside the motor on the 3.6 and very very expensive. Its actually cheaper and prob easier just to replace the motor if you were to take it to somone. If can you do it yourself, the timing chain kit runs around $250 and u can save a ton of dough. But it looks very diffucult from what I have seen. GM claimed the timing chains would last at 250k miles or more! They were only off 200k miles, lol!

Re: 2005 Cadillac CTS burning oil, rattling noise, possible engine issue

I can see I should have done more homework before I bought this 05. I have about 53K on this engine and I'm beginning to get very concerned. My plan is to take this off the road for the winter and in the spring change this timing chain and all the brakes and rotors. Question is how long can I expect this new chain to last or should I change it again in another 50K miles. Also what is the difference in the 07 engine that appears to be more reliable over the 05,06, did they re-engineer this totally or are the parts simply superior. I've had about every Chevy engine they made and have never seen such a blunder in an engine design, except for that Vega lol

^^^^for the most part I don't think most 07 CTSs have enough miles on them for the chains to fail. This next year or two will be very interesting to see if the 07s start failing.
