Talking Phase 2, 3, and 4 Nav install done. WOO-HOO!!! It ALL works!

Remove this ad
I just completed Phase 2 (Voice Command), Phase 3 (Navigation Audio / Guidance), and Phase 4 (Auto Volume Control).

Ran the wires from the Onstar Box to the radio to enable Voice Commands. Works!

Installed a Bose amp, reconfigured the wiring harness.
Ran the wires from the Amp to the radio to get Navigation audio commands (the lady talking). Works! (even have DSP now!)

Installed the microphone in the overhead console and ran the wires back to the bose amp for Auto volume control. Works!

Note: Installation of the bose amp in the non-bose system is NOT NOT NOT easy. It takes alot of work and reconfiguring the wiring, wire terminals that are hard to get, etc. I decided to do a complete middle harness that plugs into the factory wiring, and then runs to the appropriate plugs (hard to find) that fit into the Bose amp (and reconfigure the wiring between the two harness plugs - kinda plug and play). Again, NOT easy at all. If you have bose, it should be a CINCH though. Running the wires is not hard in and of itself if you have the bose.

So it can be done - to convert a non-bose, single disc system to a completely functional Navigation w/ Bose system.

Write-up soon.

After all that, don't you wish you had just ordered the system from day one?

Sounds like a lot of work for navigation...

Not really. I would have had to purchase a $43000 MSRP car and had to have had sunroof (which my head rubs on). Instead bought a $8000 less car without sunroof, and installed a Nav system for under $1000...

Re: Phase 2, 3, and 4 Nav install done. WOO-HOO!!! It ALL works!

Ron,

It would be great, in your writeups, if you also include the differences in harness mods, when upgrading from the Bose system to the Nav system. I'm hoping that, other than the antenna, it would be plug and play for the existing Bose system.

I travel a lot and I'd much rather use the factory in-dash nav, than my current laptop based bluetooth GPS nav system.

Also, do you know if the grey 2003 NAV front bezel is interchangeable with the black 2004 DVD based Nav one? (can one even obtain the bezel by itself?) I prefer the DVD system, but have the grey dash.

The bose system would be easy, you would simply need to get the additional snap in terminals for the additional 2 wires.

Then you need a 3rd plug for the onstar box, and three terminals. real easy with bose.

The face is detachable from the radio - you could then have it painted gray by a trim shop - the faces are not available separately.

Re: Phase 2, 3, and 4 Nav install done. WOO-HOO!!! It ALL works!

I can't wait for your write up miscreant. I've been wanting to do this since I got my CTS.

I have one question; are all the Nav units Bose or are some non-bose? My Nav unit that I picked up shows no sign of "Bose" If I have a non-bose Nav unit should this be a simpler installation?

Thanks miscreant for a great job!

The Headunits in any of the CTS's do not define Bose (and do not say bose either). Bose is the Speaker system, not the headunit. For instance, in the "Bose package" in the CTS you get the 6 disc and the Bose amp and Bose speakers. However, in the SRX, the same 6 disc is standard without Bose, and you can add the Bose system to it. So there is NO non-bose Nav system (there is an old thread on here where someone claimed to have done the install, but it mattered if you "got the bose or non-bose nav system" - this is completely FALSE and misleading).

Question Re: Phase 2, 3, and 4 Nav install done. WOO-HOO!!! It ALL works!

Is there any difference between the bose and non-bose speakers that requires you to replace the non-bose speakers when you upgrade to the Bose Amp?

Thx

Re: Phase 2, 3, and 4 Nav install done. WOO-HOO!!! It ALL works!

Hey good job man. I am planning to do the EXACT thing in my SRX. SRX's over here don't come with NAV so I'll have to do it myself.

You know if the same parts/part numbers will fit? Considering both cars have the same dash.

EDIT: Nope. The units look different. But I still think it's possible.

Re: Phase 2, 3, and 4 Nav install done. WOO-HOO!!! It ALL works!

Does anyone know if Miscreant ever did the write-up on Phase 2,3 and 4 of the navigation installation? I don't see it on his website.
Has he left us CTS owners to play with his new friends over at the GTO forum?
