Re: Phase 2, 3, and 4 Nav install done. WOO-HOO!!! It ALL works!

Unfortunately, no. I've emailed him several times about this. He's since sold his CTS and I don't think he participates in the forum any more. He was a valuable asset to the forum, since he worked at a dealership and had a lot of 'inside information' on specs and mods.

I have built a set of wire harnesses using teflon coated aerospace quality wire for the voice commands and audio output for his Phase 2, but can't find terminal part numbers to finish the install. I put it on the back burner several months ago. I guess I should probably finish my research and get them built.

I already have the Bose and the auto volume control mic, so I don't need to do Phases 3 and 4. I think installing a Bose amp is the most difficult part of the project.

Re: Phase 2, 3, and 4 Nav install done. WOO-HOO!!! It ALL works!

In a few weeks from now I will start the Non-Bose Amp --> Bose Amp install and I have already worked out the wire changes etc. on paper but once I physically do it I will document and take pictures of everything.

It should not be too hard to find a bose amp at a salvage yard and ask them to cut the wires so that I can use the connectors which seems like the hardest part to find.

Great!!!

I'm planning to upgrade my non-Bose CTS to exactly the same way with you.
Can you install Bose and Navigation for me if I bring my car and the navigation parts to you?
I hope, thanks.:rolleyes2

>i have a cts with the bose system. i am upgrading to navigation. can you tell me how to wire the voice command wores to the onstar ant the bose amp.. like which wires and and what part ot the harness to go to.

>The bose system would be easy, you would simply need to get the additional
snap in terminals for the additional 2 wires. Then you need a 3rd plug for the onstar box, and three terminals. real easy with bose.

I would also like to know this aswell, since i have BOSE already, what additional part numbers do i need to get for onstar, voice command and where do they go.. to the back of the head unit? or from the headunit to BOSE amp? Please specify what goes where if you already HAVE BOSE..

Thanks alot!!!

Re: Phase 2, 3, and 4 Nav install done. WOO-HOO!!! It ALL works!

Unfortunately, there are no parts to get. You have to fabricate two wire harnesses using the schematics. It's very easy on paper but finding the terminals is the hard part. Only Miscreant has identified them to date (he works at a Cadillac dealer) but he's not a member here any more and hasn't documented this part of his install.

I've built the wire harnesses using Mil-spec wire but put the project on hiatus for a while out of frustration locating proper terminals and the one On-star connector. I need to restart my search for terminals to finish it out and document the process.

In Miscreant's step by step, located here....

http://www.cadillacfaq.com/faq/answe...ert/index.html

If i am understanding it right, he mentions that the terminals/pins in this SCOSCHE harness (#VW01R) are the same, and to use them, as they are at readily available at every local Bestbuy store;

Are these the pins we need? If so, what two harnesses do i have to make, how many wires are they, and where do they go. In my case, putting NAV into a BOSE system, are the harness part their, just with emty holes for the extra pins?

Thanks.

Re: Phase 2, 3, and 4 Nav install done. WOO-HOO!!! It ALL works!

The Scosche connector fits the pins for the head unit side of the interface. I used that to tap into the VSS signal on the instrument panel. It's not as easy to find as led to believe (it's a reverse harness). I found mine on EBay for about $6. You will have a functional Nav if you stop here. To get voice commands and audio directions, you need to install two more wire harnesses from the head unit (e.g., radio) to the Bose amp and On-star boxes in the trunk.

The pins on the On-Star box and the Bose amp are likely very different from the Schsche connector. I haven't pulled either to identify them yet, but Miscreant mentioned Amp and Tyco connectors. Once I get a part number from a connector (or visually identify it), I can look them up in a Digikey catalog and order the terminals in bulk. I'm sure they only cost about a nickel each. There is also one additional connector required for the On-Star box. For the head unit and the Bose, you slide the new wire/terminals into existing connectors. You'll then have to run the wires (hidden) up to the dash to connect to the head unit.

I prefer to buy new terminals and crimp them on, like the factory, rather than solder on the ends of someone else's crimped terminals. I'm lucky enough to own a company that has an electronics lab, so I have access to many tools for this type of job, including the Mil-spec twisted shielded wire that's required (we use this for wiring up spacecraft test equipment and UAV's for the military). Once I figure it all out, I've decided to offer them to forum members (with detailed install instructions) for the cost of materials only (~$25/set), since I can get it all in bulk. I'll also post the parts list and vendors, so one could make their own if they like.

That would be great, count me in!! IMO, working voice commands are a must...

*Also.....What guage is the Mil-spec twisted shielded wire....22 ,???

*Also..... Can a DVD MOVIE be popped into A 2003/CTS DVD software driven NAV head unit, and be made playable? ......has anyone tried this one yet?

That's a real bummer that Miscreant isn't around anymore...and JUST when I needed his expertise, too. I'm in the same position on my own custom audio project. I need a source and part numbers for certain terminals. I do know that I can use the VW01R Harness for 3 of my wires, but there are 2 other connectors that I need terminal info for. Onward to continue my research!

All terminals and pins can be obtained through http://www.powerandsignal.com but you will have to buy quantities.

Re: Phase 2, 3, and 4 Nav install done. WOO-HOO!!! It ALL works!

I don't think getting the terminals and connectors is a problem. Knowing which part numbers to order is the hurdle. Miscreant said he had them documented, but left before he shared that information. Digikey is my prime source of electrical parts. Prices get cheaper the more you buy, but the break points are usually 10, 100, 1000, and 10,000 part quantities.

The VW01R will get you Nav side of the harness (5 pins, plus the VSS pin), but the Bose requires 2 (likely different terminals) and the VCIM requires 3 more. One terminal at the Nav end and one at the VCIM end are grounded shield wires that one will have to splice onto the shield of the twisted sheilded pair wiring. We use Tyco solder pigtails for this on all of our MIL-STD wiring. Only one new connector for the VCIM is required. All other terminals will snap into existing connectors

If I knew the part numbers I'd start with a few hundred of each terminal, since I know everyone on this forum who converted to a Nav wouldn't mind buying the harnessing to complete the voice commands (On-Star VCIM) and audio directions (Bose amp) for the $25, or so, in material costs. There are only 10 terminals required for the two harnesses. At the typical 5-10 cents for each terminal, the twisted shielded wire is the driver at around $1/foot. That typically comes in 500 foot spools.

Re: Phase 2, 3, and 4 Nav install done. WOO-HOO!!! It ALL works!

All of these connectors can be had at powerandsignal.com
Since I already have a Bose amp installed, all i'm looking for is the twisted shield wire to run from the amp to the back of the nav unit.(for directions)-Ihear the voice command isn't that reliable. Could i buy from you two wires wrapped(shielded) to connect from the amp to the radio.

? I'm sure powerandsignal could tell you which pins are used. they are the supplier to delco/bose.

Non Bose Connectors:

12064749 - 2-Way F Metri-Pack 480 Series (BK)
12084945 - 16-Way F Micro-Pack 100 Series (GY)

12110206 - 24-Way F Micro-Pack 100 Series (L-BU)
12064993 - 6-Way F Micro-Pack 100 Series (BK)

Note that the 12110206 is used in both installations go it can be
re-used.

The cable is nothing special. You can get shielded twisted pair anywhere. I dont even think you need twisted pair and you could just use any shielded cable. In your case you should only need to run the two wires so if all you want is the voice its a piece of cake. As for the nav being reliable its not. I went to atlantic city last night and I used the NAV for directions and it kept wanting me to get off of a main road with no lights to take a slightly shorter route that had all lights and would have taken me double the time.
