Cylinder 4 misfire...

Remove this ad
I started my car today and went about ablock or so and my check engine light came on. The car started stuttering like if it wanted to turn off but didnt only when stopped. When the car is going its fine. Took it to Auto Zone and checked the code and they told me that it had a cylinder 4 missfire, said its likely due to a spark plug or plug wires. What do you guys think? Any help would be very much appreciated.

Re: Cylinder 4 misfire...

How did Azone decide on cyl 4? Did Azone pull plug wire??

You can identify which plug or wire is bad by removing individual plug wires from plug. Process of elimination.

They plugged in the code reader and thats what they came up with. Just trying to figure out if it could be something else, hope not.

Re: Cylinder 4 misfire...

z06, auto zone determine that it's cylinder 4 by the scan tool.

But correct me if I am wrong guys, but our engines does not have plug wires going to a signal source? In other words the ignition coil is right on top of each plug. If that is the case, that the coil is on top. Then it might just be the plug.

Re: Cylinder 4 misfire...

No, there are no wires, there is a Coil pack that sits on the three plugs on the Left and on the Right. It may be a plug. What engine do you have? There may be some oil in the plug well fowling the plug. Clear the code and see if it comes back.

Re: Cylinder 4 misfire...

No plug wires?? Maybe that is why my 3.6 never ran. lol

I have a shop manual. I occasionally read my Helms' shop manual, and I am familiar with COPS. I must be getting old, senile or just plain rich.

Without taking it to dealer or indy shop, might try changing out that plug first. If no change in engine idle, then look at possibility of new COPS--or a trip to dealer.

Ford has had problems with COPS on retro Tbirds. Ford recently extended the COPS warranty on most Tbirds to 100,000 miles.

You might also consider visiting service mgr at local Caddy dealer and asking for his input. A few tacos might get you some helpful hints on how to diagnose the problem.
