I have recently noticed that there is a type of humming sound coming from my rear. The sound changes pitch with my speed, so today I jacked up the back of my car to see what it was. I don't think that it is the bearing since usually if the bearings are bad you can move the tire side to side. So I looked at the axles and when I grabbed on to both of the axles I was able to move the passenger side axle and not the driver side. So im wondering if there is a bearing at all at the end of the axle that would need to be replaced or do I need to replace the entire axle. If anyone has had this similar problem I would appretiate the help. Thanks
check your rear differential...the best way to do this is to put the car in reverse and turn the wheel all the way to the right and back up...then do the same thing turning your wheel all the way to the left...if the noise is there, then you need a new rear differential...
as far as the axle being loose on one side and not the other, i am not sure if that would be a bad bearing, bushing or just a bad differential...these are the places i would start
shaking the rear wheel when you'll have a bad bearing is sometimes not the best way to do it. I had, 2 months ago, a bad rear bearing and I did the same thing as you, try to shake the wheel but seems very solid. So I said to myself its the differential. I went at a dealer and they told me it was my differential. I went at a transmission/differential specialist and with a screwdriver, they try to focus on the sound. When they put the screwdriver on my left rear wheel, they automatically said it was the bearing in this wheel because they could hear the bearings. Since then, no more grinding.
You could try to do this with a screwdriver touching the wheel hub.
alright thanks ill try to test out the turning the wheel in reverse but the only thing is that you can't hear the sound until im doing about 30mph so I dont know if this will make a difference but ill try it to see otherwise ill just hope it is the bearing since that will be a little bit cheaper.
if it is your rear differential, then there is somebody saleing a brand new one in the classifieds for a fair price...if it is just the bearing, then even better for you
wakeboarder, if you want my opinion, go to a differential specialist. Ask them to check if the sound you are hearing is coming from the diff or one of the rear wheels. They will lift the car with one person inside the car spining the wheel while the other guy will try to find the source of the sound.
Thats what I did and it took 1 minute for them to find out it was a wheel bearing issue.
Unfortunately here in montreal, the aftermarket was 100$ more expensive than the OEM one. 645$ later + one hour of labor (65$) = problem is solved and no more sound! The dealer wanted to change my diff.
BTW, the bearing it self cannot be changed. You have to change the entire hub with the abs and wheel speed sensor I saw them do the work and I'm glad they did it!
