Can you flat tow a CTS?

Hi everyone. I'm a new guy here and need some information. I am considering the purchase of a manual transmission CTS and need to know if it can be flat towed behind our RV. I e-mailed Cadillac and they really didn't help. I asked a local dealer and they didn't have a clue. If we can't flat tow this car then it's not going to meet our needs, and that would be too bad. Great car, and if we can make it work we'll join the ranks. Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Bruce

If you keep the car out of gear and release the parking brake, I think flat towing the CTS wouldn't be a problem.

Whenever I've flat-towed a car I always removed the driveshaft.

What about a set of dollies? If you put the back end of the car on dollies and just drag the front wheels, I can't see where there'd be a problem.

That is exactly what I was thinking, however the dealer said no, even with the manual. He muttered something about being a "wet system".

I'm going to check with another dealer today to see if I can finally get a straight answer.

    Thanks. Anyone else?

Hmmm...the drivetrain lubrication may only be lubricated when the engine is running but I thought the drivetrain wasn't lubricated by the engine oil. Isn't it self contained?

Some transmissions (mostly automatics) get their lubrication from a pump driven off the input shaft. If the engine isn't running, then the pump isn't either. That's why I said I always removed the driveshaft-- so that nothing in the transmission would be spinning. Rear differentials should have no problem being towed.

I called Remco, the company that makes most of the specality driveline components to tow with, and they said with the manual it's no problem. I sure would like to hear from someone who is actually doing it.

    Thanks,

    Bruce

I haven't had experience with Cadillac but I worked with Toyota for years and always had customers ask if they could flat tow. Toyota as a corporation always did the CYA thing and said no to protect warranty claims but I had many customers who did it with absolutely no problems whatsoever. All you have to do is start the vehicle and let it warm up every time prior to starting your trip and every time you stop for fuel because it is a "wet system" and that protects the transmission components. Not a big deal to anyone really I would think. You won't hear that from Cadillac or GM but I know it can be done safely

I'm pretty sure they figured it out 9 years ago.
