Question Using/Wiring High Beams as DRL's on 2006 CTS

Remove this ad
I installed 6000k HID for my low beams and love them.... I tried using High output LED's for the High Beams and Fog lights and was not impressed, just not enough Umpf....... so I've purchase a set 6000k HID to changed out my Fog lights.
Since the Fog Lights and Low beams working together are pretty adequate for all extra lighting needs, I thought I'd leave the LED's in for the high Beams and use them as DRL's.
I'm thinking of just clipping the high beam harness and wire the high beam's straight into the small existing drl's
Has any one done this before...............Anyone know of a easier way to rewire for this.............

Thanks

Remember that the DRLs are also the turn signals. I'm not sure wht you are changing but you'll still need your turn signals.

Question Re: Using/Wiring High Beams as DRL's on 2006 CTS

Thanks for the heads-up, at first I was considering the 194/T10 corner lights, but there mainly the parking lights, and would be turned on at the wrong times.
I was slightly confused because of all the lights and when they are applied (turn on).
Are lights (yellow on my CTS) above the fog light actually called the DRL's ???? and they don't illuminate when the headlights are on ????
and they should be a two filament bulb with a three wire harness (haven't looked yet). which would be easy to splice in to, thus not causing any problem with the blinkers.

Yeah, that will be weird. It would be cool to have LED's in the high beams, but.... meh.

I don't think it's that simple. The turning filement is the same as the DRL filiment. So during the day, when the DRLs are on and you signal to turn, the DRL filiment is flashed. Some guys were disabling the DRLs by bending pinH on the light relay (under the dash). I admire your inventive spirit.. It may be easier to go to the fuse box and tap off the spare fuse that is live when the car is on. That may save a lot of headaches.

Re: Using/Wiring High Beams as DRL's on 2006 CTS

They claim the LED's are replacements for the High and Fog, the coloring is a good match to the 6000K HID but the visible light output is lousy.............................

Re: Using/Wiring High Beams as DRL's on 2006 CTS

Thanks Sammy, it does help.... gives me some extra things to think about.
I'm taking the front end off this weekend to install the HID Fogs, I'll look at the wiring more closely and see if it will work......... don't want to disable the DRL's just transfer them to the high (LED) beams (minus the turn signal problem). Fuse box idea would always have the lights on with the Lows ons.
Was hopping someone had tried this to give some detailed insight......

Guy

Here is the link to the instructions.

http://www.cadillacfaq.com/faq/answers/disdrl.html

Some guys bend the pin to the relay, I cut the wire and put in a switch so you can still use them.

You cannot just use high beams as your DRL. You will be blinding people. Cars that use high beams as DRL cut the power output down to somewhere around 30-40% for this reason. Still doesn't work though IMO. DRL FTL.

I cut the wire and spliced in spade connectors for if/when I sell the car.

I do not understand why they used the turns for DRL. It's gonna burn out the turn signals prematurely. Brilliant idea.

Re: Using/Wiring High Beams as DRL's on 2006 CTS

Thanks everyone for input................ Jimmy H, the reason I'm thinking of using the High beams as DRL's is because I'm using High output LED's, I found out they don't put out anywhere near the light output as regular high beams (there as useless as the 194 bulb), but the color matches all the HID Mod's and they shouldn't blind anyone.
Yes it was absolutely Lame that they use turn signals as part of the DRL system which killed my idea of doing some simple re-wiring.
I just finished changing the Fog Lights to HID's and together with the Regular HID Head Lights they look GREAT..............................

Still thinking of trying to custom the high 's to DRL's by wiring them to power through the fuse box and using a some sort of light sensitive switch. Anyone got a better Idea or heard of someone doing this...... there useless leaving them in as high beams (unless I replace them with the old bulbs) other than the fact they have that HID look and color.

Cheers...........

I understand you are going for a look; but how often are YOU going to get to look at it? Seems like a lot of effort to me for something only strangers will likely ever see.

Re: Using/Wiring High Beams as DRL's on 2006 CTS

To a certain extent Yes (with as many times I've had the front end off) but we all like our cars to stand out from the crowd ( lot of CTS's out there) and look nice, It's a hobby and gives my something to do. I haven't seen another one like it in this area anyway.................... maybe I'll start a trent........ Piss off a couple of BMW owners........
I think I did find the easiest solution by purchasing the DRL control Module and spicing the DRL input (H). Just put the Module near the fuse box and run the lights off that, I was looking at the module schematic and it looks like it would be pretty easy...........
