DD nav and system install

Remove this ad
I finally got around to finding time to start on my system. It consists of a Pioneer F900BT nav, Pioneer 920 XM tuner, Infinity 4 ch amp, Infinity 600w mono amp, Infinity Kappa component speakers, Infinity Kappa coaxials, Two Alpine Type R 10" subs, and Peripheral steering wheel control interface.
I used the factory volume knob to control the subs, and installed the new Pioneer unit while still retaining the DIC and all warning chimes, rap, etc. Here are some pics of the install so far:

Trimming the face and circuit board. Here I was fabbing up the factory volume knob to use as a remote control for the sub amp.

Amp rack and cover:

Amps mounted in car:

The sub enclosure. I'll get some more pics of the finished product once I have every little detail done.

The enclosure has a plexi window (with an etched Cadillac wreath) so the subs are visible from the center chamber. The middle chamber is vented into the passenger cabin via a port mated to the ski opening in the rear seat. I installed lights inside the box to light up the subs, as well as in the amp rack "enclosure". I also recovered all the custom and original panels in the trunk with black carpet rather than the factory silvery-grey trunkliner. I went with 10" subs rather than 12s for sound quality and weight savings. I also used Birch ply instead of MDF for the enclosure to help save weight with no loss of acoustic qualities.

Here's another pic. Still have to clean it up and take care of a couple small details here and there, including the frosted Cadillac wreath on the plexi.

About half of it, but I rarely use it. I usually only drive this car on the weekends.

beautifull set up, really like the idea of the grill. would look good with checker plate under your amps.

Re: DD nav and system install

Looks great. I would like vented plexi over the amps instead of the mesh, but I'm sure you have your reasons.

Looks good! I want to see the dash installed.

Funny...the original plan included plexi, but I saw the mesh grille just sitting off to the side in my garage and thought "why not do something different".

I have the nav in the dash. I'll try to get some pics up in the next day or so.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Re: DD nav and system install

I thought you might have done the mesh for better airflow to the amps, for better performance and to reduce the risk of overheating. If you aren't worried about that, plexi would set it off better IMO. Or even plexi over the mesh, I can kinda picture that too.

Re: DD nav and system install

Some more pics of the nav installed and the enclosure vented through the rear seat opening. Everything sounds pretty good. Nice, tight, and clean sounding. DIC and everything still works. The factory volume knob controls my sub volume.

Still waiting on the etched Cadillac wreath decal that will go on the plexi:
