Question Intake HP Increase?

Remove this ad
I have performance questions for those who have tried or experienced this mod:

K&N claims their 57 series Gen.II FIPK (Fuel Injection Performance Kit) could increase HP in the 05' CTS 3.6L by as much as 10%!

A simple air intake filter system "drop in mod" such as this would be a good deal, if it performs as advertised (much more responsive-louder)!

1. Have you found (or heard of) the increase in HP and responsiveness to be true?

2. Once installed, has the 3.6 had any associated engine code problems or needs for resetting of operational engine parameters to "get it working\performing" (is this truly just a "drop-in-solution")?

3. Is the filter mod "Louder" at normal idle and speeds, or just when you get on the gas?

Any info on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Ted

Re: Intake HP Increase?

I have a Volant on my 3.6L It is a bit louder and has dyno'd to give 13RWHP. Not a bad gain. The K&N intake is supposed to be even louder than the Volant but I think it adds a little less HP

Re: Intake HP Increase?

I had the K&N on my 03 3.2L and it didn't make much noticeable power increase IMO. All im gonna say is thats IT"S LOUD and it only lasted about a month on my car before I went back to stock . Every time someone got in the car the said "what is wrong with your engine" and that was annoying enough!

For a little rice burner it may sound fine but in a quiet Caddy, it just doesn't fit IMO and didn't make that much noticeable power to keep it either. If you had a "V" maybe but for a std. CTS, don't bother just enjoy the car the way it is...

Re: Intake HP Increase?

Well, since you're asking about a 3.6L & not a 3.2L, I'll chime in a little.

1. There will be an increase in HP, however, I don't think it is 10% (255*.9=25.5). Some members tested the different intakes out on the same car on the same dyno a few years ago & the Volant showed a greater increase than the K&N did. Volant showed 13-14RWHP & the K&N showed only about 8RWHP. By ricer-math, 25.5*.8=20.4. Obviously, 20.4RWHP was not achieved during these dyno tests. So, while it will boost your engines Horsepower a bit, it will likely not match the advertised 10% increase. As far as responsiveness, "meh." If you want it to be more responsive P&P the throttle body. Also, look into a tune; HP Tuners made the software for the CTS to be tuned, so its out there.

2) I did not get a C.E.L. when I installed my intake. I do think many do. I did however get one when I took mine off. I can't remember correctly, but I pulled the code & it was in regards to the MAF. I reset the car computer, code gone.

3) As far as sound, yes it'll be more noticeable. My volant was boxed & it was still noticeable. From what others have reported, the K&N--since it is not boxed--is more pronounced than the Volant. So yeah, expect some grumble.

Re: Intake HP Increase?

i have the K&N air intake for my 04 cts and i got roughly 7-8 RWHP but it does sound under mid randge excell a lot loudder lol but when at higher rpm 4-5000 it sort of whistles lol almost sounds like a blow off valve when it shifts at higher rpms... it can get a lil annoying but it doesnt really give you better gas millage

Re: Intake HP Increase?

You need to pay attention to the phrase "up to".
as in "up to 10%".

In reality beleive about a 5hp increase overall.

Do we want to make a write up on how to build your own cone kit adapter or no?

Re: Intake HP Increase?

Go with Volant, hands down! I've tried both, overall, I've noticed better hp and it has a nice deep growl, no over the top rice burner here, no whistling(on a Cad, I think not),etc.. It comes enclosed in a box with nice chrome letters, large snorkel, fits nice and looks VERY clean. Well worth it..
