    engine problems, car suddenly dies???

So I tried to turn on my car when i got back to the parking lot and it wouldn't start. I let it sit for about 20 min and it started, so i was driving and it died on me, so i pulled in a gas station and bought a battery from kragen next door. After about another 30 min i put the new battery in and it started so i drove and got stuck at a light 5 min later. My mechanic looked at it today and said the engine is not saying there's a problem at all. He thinks it might be the computer system itself, which i guess pretty much screws me. It sounds to me something is telling the engine to kill after a short time, but i'm not a mechanic. If anyone knows what it might be or has heard something like that please reply, thanks!

Sounds like a crank position sensor.

I agree, sounds like a Crank Shaft position sensor. They don't always throw a code.

I did the same thing, purshased a new battery. The CPS is about $60 and you can do it yourself with a little DIY skill.

BTW make sure that the battery you purchased is 800 CCA or higher or you will have more starting problems.

I had the same problem drive somewhere perfect got back in car would not start but I had full power radio, lights, phone, etc. Sat for 10 minutes started right up no further problems. Called dealer ship they replaced some sensor and was good for a year than same sensor went bad fixed it again and no problems since. They told me it was a shifter sensor but I'll see if I can get the exact item from my old bills.

This is so common. IMO annyone with an '03 should change their CPS if it's still original. It's not worth waiting and riking getting stuck with a dead car and having to pay for towing.

Oh, and it's probably time to get your coolant flushed also as you're probably now into your 5-6th year.

oh ok great thanks for all the info. I talked to the mechanic today and he still doesn't know what's wrong, so i told him about the sensor and said he'll replace it but not sure if it's the problem b/c the system isn't saying there's a problem. I'm 99% sure it's the sensor so i'm going to have it replaced and hope that works

Re: engine problems, car suddenly dies???

I dont think the car would just die on you if it was the crank position sensor.

It may be the Engine Control Module. And if your out of the factory warranty, this part is covered by the emissions warranty if your car is under 80k.

It's close to the oil filter, kind of hard to reach. you need a torx socket to remove it. The connector is in the back if the engine near the fire wall. Search this forum for more details, some did a nice write-up.
