Mid range CTS in the future?

I would expect once the CTS-V comes out,
Caddy would be thinking of a 3rd engine
that has power between the base 3.6L
    and 5.7L. Maybe a Northstar V8 CTS?
I would think this would happen by the time
the 500HP CTS-V is introduced. Seems
like there would be a market for an 8 cylinder
CTS that's not at the super highend.

    its 400hp I believe...

I'd just be happy with a 3.6L with a 6 speed manual, that would be plenty quick for me, and with an overdrive 6th I'm hoping it will get a real world easy 30mpg on the highway

The first version of the CTS-V will be with the LS6 5.7L V8 from the current
Corvette Z06. Two years after it's supposed to get the next generation V8 from
the next gen high performance Corvette for a whopping 500HP. So that's
why it seems a mid range V8 would be nice fit between the 255HP 3.6L
    and 500HP V8.

If they make the 6th gear nice and tall like they do on the Corvette, then
highway mileage of 30mpq should be doable. The 6 speed Vette is rated
at 28 highway although it weighs about 400lbs less than the CTS.

i've read several sources saying that the 3.6 is designed to be turbocharged, so that may be just the engine you are looking for

    Is the 2004 Bonneville getting a 4.4L V8?

    I vote for that motor.

Northstar V8 doesn't fit in the CTS.

Somehow they fit the 5.7L LS6 for the CTS-V and it supposed
to get the next generation Corvette Z06 6.3/6.4L V-8. If they can
do that, it seems like the 4.6L Northstar is large for its displacement.

I believe its because of the DOHC, they are wide and tall

DOHC heads are much bulkier than the LS1/LS6-type pushrod heads.

This makes the engine wider. The Northstar is fairly compact and lightweight as DOHC V8s of its displacement go, but while it's a little lighter than the LS6 it's still bulkier.

The 3.6L V6 is a DOHC design, but it's a 60-degree engine - the Vee angle between the banks is narrower, making the engine narrower overall.

The LS6 is an excellent engine, but I still find it fascinating that while virtually every other CTS-size RWD car on the market can accommodate its manufacturer's DOHC V8, the CTS cannot. Oh well.
