Re: What the hell am I hearing ?

Its your CD player.

Further investigation reveals that every time you open your door, the CD player activates a proximity sensor that looks for a digital signature on your key fob. That clicking sound you're hearing is the CD player priming the C4 detonators in the dashboard. If the sensor doesn't locate your fob within 35.6 seconds, then your car will explode.

You didn't care for the exploding car answer I guess?

I'm gonna take a long shot here. Most modern electronics like iPods, DVD Players, Electronic Kitchen Appliances, YOUR CAR, etc... run software, which most likely are supported by operating systems. Operating systems by nature require a boot time. Some electronics take a minute to initialize, while others have a quickstart feature which involves a low level of energy consumption to keep the OS resident.

I'm going to guess that since the CD player in the dash is a component of a larger computerized system, including the DIC, there is a minimal boot time for the operating system to initialize. Furthermore, as your vehicle has been configured to recognize the fact that you are about to use it, since you have unlocked the doors, it begins to initialize the system electronics without having the key in the ignition.

Finally, this proactive initialization provides you with that 'quickstart' condition, as the electronics have all booted/initialized before you have inserted the key. This clicking sound you are hearing in the CD player is most likely part of that bootup process, as the CD player is recalling from memory the last 'play point' that it was at before you shut off the ignition.

If thats not good enough for you, then I suggest you make sure you have the right fob, otherwise your car will 'splode.

Re: What the hell am I hearing ?

On a somewhat similar note, a few times I have opened the drivers door with the key in the ignition. True to form, the chimes were ringing as I sat down in the seat. I close the drivers door, but the chimes would not stop. I turned the key and they finally stopped, but until I touched the key in the ignition, the chimes just kept chiming, and chiming, and chiming....

And yes, the door was fully closed, and no other doors were open.

Splain' that one!

Re: What the hell am I hearing ?

I think that the CTS must run windows. (joke, of course, but they have similar reliability.) Frequently my CD player's software decides to crash causing the CD player not work for days and just display "Initializing CD unit" All the while most of the DIC settings/readings reset. Pretty annoying!
