Sorry, catching this thread a little late.
First, as an AMSOI Direct Dealer, I'm clearly biased, so feel free to take my opinions with a grain of salt.
AMSOIL has started to include Royal Purple in its testing and it hasn't performed well.

For the original poster, there is considerable convincing data on the Bob is the Oil Guy forum indicating that Mobil 1 has gone from a Group IV PAO basestock to using a large amount of Group III basestock. How much isn't clear, but it looks like a lot. Their website is now vague on the topic stating "Mobil 1® uses high-performance fluids, including polyalphaolefins (PAOs), along with a proprietary system of additives." So they say they use PAO, but not how much.
To a direct question posed on their website:
" Question:
Have Group 3 Base Oils Been Substituted for Better PAO Base Oils?
Why does Mobil 1 refuse to specify as to the base oil used in their synthetic products. I remember the Mobil 1 oils in the past proudly proclaimed that it was a PAO based oil. We all know the newer group 3 hydrocracked base oils are much cheaper to use than PAO based oils and are less stable in high temps. It would seem to me that if Mobil 1 still uses the better PAO base oils as their primary base oil, you would want to clarify it among those who are switching to other oils because of the ongoing internet talk that says Mobil has substituted group 3 oils for the better PAO oils. Any comments that would clarify the issue?

Answer:
As we're sure you can understand, ExxonMobil does not discuss formulations publicly,as this information is proprietary. We would rather focus on the advanced technology and proven performance that our engine oils and other products offer to our customers. Mobil 1 is the world’s leading synthetic motor oil and the one chosen by more original equipment manufacturers around the world as factory fill. We want those facts to speak for us so our customers feel confident they are getting a high quality, high performance product that provides ultimate protection to their vehicles."
Okay... I'll repeat that I'm biased, but how vague is that?
As for the comment posted above that AMSOIL is twice as much as Mobil 1, I'll say not true. While I can't post pricing online I can share it with anyone who desires it via PM. AMSOIL prices, particularly for
AMSOIL Preferred Customer Program is very reasonable.
As for the comment above that oil is oil. I'll disagree. All oils use various basestocks, various modifiers, and various additives. They are, or at least can be, very different. AMSOIL's Signature Series and SAE lines of synthetic oils use Group IV PAO basestocks, and very high levels of detergents and anti-wear additives.
FYI, recently had my 06 CTS-V oil sampled:
Cadillac CTS-V Used Oil Analysis – Mobil 1 5w30 vs AMSOIL 0w30
Not exactly 100% conclusive, but I'm happy with the results and I'll stick with my AMSOIL.
