V springs fit regular cts??

Remove this ad
I can't beleive that I want to change some more on the car but I don't like the soft ride in my CTS(06 CTS 3.6) Are the CTS-V springs consideribly more stiff? Do they fit? Any better alternatives(I don't want to lower the car etc though just a firmer ride)

Re: V springs fit regular cts??

they will fit, they will ride 1/4 lower, but will probably ride like a chuck wagon. if you want firmer why not just swap out shocks and struts to v"s or fe3 if you have soft ride suspenion? eibach springs are the way to go, but you will lower yo car to a perfect hight.

Re: V springs fit regular cts??

They will fit, yes, but you'll need to be more specific about your suspension.

If you have the FE3's (load-leveling), then the V springs will only drop the front.

Id look at a full V suspension swap...shocks, sways etc. You'll get a small drop, much firmer ride, and you should be able to do it fairly cheap.

Re: V springs fit regular cts??

Hmmm, I just checked the sticker and I have FE2 suspension(is this considered a firm ride already?) Tires are the factory 17" Eagle RSA's but car feels a bit soft.

The V sits 1/4" lower? or does it matter which suspension it has? I'm a bit confused??

Re: V springs fit regular cts??

FE2s are soft, FE3's are stiffer.

FE4's are standard on the CTS-V (and stiffer than the FE3's)

FG2's are an option on the CTS-V (and stiffer than the FE4's)

so as far as stiffness goes, FE2 < FE3 < FE4 < FG2

if i'm wrong, I'm drunk.

Re: V springs fit regular cts??

the vee sits lower because of its springs. fe2 is supposed to have about the same dampening rates as fe3's. But when i lowered my car i had fe3's so i switched to fe2's to allow for lowering. Then i modified and reinstalled the fe3's, they are definitely firmer.
they have a load leveling function in them and i was bottoming out sometimes over big dips in the road, lowered with 20's and big guys in the back seat. so i opted to go back to a modified fe3. noticeable difference.
i think if you definitely want a firmer ride just go higher up the chain with shock and struts, you don't have to swap out the springs. remember the vee springs are designed for an engine that is a couple hundred lbs more in weight. being overly stiff isn't going to help your handling.

Re: V springs fit regular cts??

Firmer shocks will stiffen up your ride. If you go Eibachs, they are within 2% of the CTS-V stock spring rates, but will lower your car about 1.2". The V actually sits about 1/2" lower than our cars, stock, but putting those springs in our cars which are about 400 lbs lighter, will raise that up some. RobertCTS put some on his CTS before he sold it and reported about a 1/4"overall drop and stiffer ride. Personally, I think the CTS sits too high stock. Eibachs give it the sporty ride and the right look, without looking ricer slammed. I actually shimmed my fronts up 1/4" to match the 1" drop in the rear with the WildWhl spacer mod to the FE4's.

If you want to keep your stock ride height, simply put on some FE3 shocks. If you want to go much stiffer, go FE4's from the CTS-V, although I'd match it with V springs. While your at it, pick up a used set of V sway bars for around $100, or get the Eibach sways. Cornering will be noticeably improved.

For clarification, FE1's are the soft-ride luxury shocks, FE2's are the non-load leveling sport shocks introduced in mid '05, FE3's are the load leveling sport shocks, and FE4's are the stock CTS-V shocks. Rumors are that there is an FE5 sport shock option out on newer cars, but I have no idea how stiff they are. Don't even consider FG2's on a V6 car. Those are very stiff upgrade shocks for the CTS-V. Firm but compliant is the key to a road driven car suspension.

For Alex:

The part number for the V6 CTS Ebach springs is 3878.140. They fit all first gen CTS's from '03 to '07

Heres a set for $255 shipped:

Re: V springs fit regular cts??

didn't realize that eibach were so close to the v' springs as far as rates go. eibachs would still be the way to go if you'r planning on springs.
odysseus or anybody else, do you know if the fe4's also sit 1/2 an inch lower than the fe3's?
like as far as, from the bottom mount to the top mount? i actually want to lower just my rear end like 1/4 to 1/2", i'll even trim a bit off my eibach coils if i have to.

Re: V springs fit regular cts??

Yes the V springs fit the regular CTS.
I did the whole conversation:

V-Shocks, V-Sways and V-Springs, the car handles completely different.
And all this cost me around $600 bucks installed.

Re: V springs fit regular cts??

Tommy Compton are you saying you were bottoming out with the FE2 or FE3 load leveling shocks?

So now you are using the FE3 modified setup.

thanx stillen
