Front Main Seal

Hi All, I have an 03 CTS, had my oil changed a couple weeks ago over at Firestone. About a week later I noticed a couple drops of oil a night leaking form underneith the car near the pan. I assumed they didnt tighten the plug or the filter, I took it back to them today and they said its in the Main Seal. I called my dealer and he said he highly doubts this as they have never done this on a CTS, im just wondering if anyone else maybe has had this problem. This weekend im going to jack it up and take a look myself. Any other thoughts of what it could be? The car has about 96k miles on it. Thanks, Mike

Re: Front Main Seal

Ironically, I found mine to be leaking as well. The main seal is between the oil pan and block yes?

Mine isnt leaking enough to leave oil stains anywhere but I did notice it under the car on a hose.

I am not concerned about it. Should I be?

Obviously I have a 3.6

The front main seal is the round seal that goes around the crankshaft. The seal between the oil pan and the block is the oil pan seal.

Concerned? Unless it is gushing out, it is not a problem. You could let a slow dripping leak go forever, just have to keep an eye on your oil level. It will get blown backward and mess up the rest of the engine, trans, etc. If not leaking fast, it is up to you if you want it fixed. It sucks to drip because you can't park in your friend's driveway.

Dan

Re: Front Main Seal

Its not dripping at all. I just noticed it because I was under the car doing some exploring. I keep an eye on my oil level always because of my mods and driving style. I usually have to add a quart between oil changes. I change the oil based on the OLM so it is not super often.

Not dripping at all? Is it just wet? (Hey, you found a wet spot!). Little wet is better than drip. Some oil leaks are very minor like that. They seep out slowly over a long period and get covered in dust. I think most engines have a few of them, especially if you don't clean the engine occasionally. I don't think that is too bad.
