I think that the oil cap means that GM endorses Mobil 1, in fact uses it as factory fill, and recommends that you use it. However, you can check your owners manual and use any oil that meets the recommended GM rating; this does not translate that you should only use Mobil 1 (though obviously Mobil 1 does meet that standard).

Re: Regular vs. Synthetic

GM requires synthetic (not necessarily Mobil 1) in the CTS. After you're out of warranty, use what you dare, but until then - here's the direct quote from the manual:

"The engine requires a special engine oil meeting GM Standard GM4718M. Oils meeting this standard may be identified as synthetic, and should also be identified with the American Petroleum Institute Certified for Gasoline Engines starburst symbol. However, not all synthetic API oils with the starburst symbol will meet this GM standard. You should look for and use only an oil that meets GM Standard GM4718M. GM Goodwrench® oil meets all the requirements for your vehicle."

Re: Regular vs. Synthetic

That's what I thought. I already have mobil 1 in the garage that I use for the V, I shall be using it for the CTS also.

On a related note, I rented a Fusion over the weekend, and on the gas filler cap it says "Ford recommends BP fuels" with a BP logo on it. That was a first.
