    Check engine light on.

My check engine light came on today on my 05 CTS.

My question is, are the codes suppose to come up on the display when this happens, or only when plugged in at the dealer? I was under the impression that I would see a code number with all of this code talk going around, LOL.

    Thanks

    K, thanks.

I just called Cadillac and they told me to drop it off tomorrow. I will get to AutoZone before then. I hate to go to the dealer because of all the stuff they will try to sell me. When they did my pinion seal the service writer tried selling me 900.00 worth of stuff for a car that had 27,000 miles on it.

Yes, I thought the same thing. It went on before I put gas into it and stayed on after.
Dealer said most the time it's something with emissions.

happened to me once! I was driving and suddenly, check engine's on! Called the dealer and he told me check engine is 90% related to emission so he asked me: is you car running great right now?! Yeah.. well dont botter coming here for nothing.. wait a day or 2 and it should be gone.. he was right..

If the light is in steady it's not critical. If the light is flashing it's about to blow up. OnStar can give you a code readout. Punch the blue button.

I think I might take your advice and wait a day or so and see if it goes off.

He said the same thing about 90% of the time being emissions.

Hello lacluva and welcome. You might have better luck with your question on the DTS board.

did you try reading the code from the car?

Not sure if it works on all models(im 2003 and it works like magic)

    (1) turn your key in the ignition almost to the last position(so that everything is flashing but the car is OFF)
    (2) instantly hold F1 and F6 and wait till menu with all the codes pops up
    (3) copy the code with the * (ie. P1028)
(4)go to caddy FAQ and look up a website that interprets codes
(5)if its something stupid reset the code, dont take it to the dealer but instead have a nice cold beer and watch a hockey game!!!
    GO LEAFS!!!

That procedure doesn't work except on the most ancient of the early '03s.

Thanks a lot chico. This is what I was after, but according to dkozloski, I don't think it will work on my 05.

    BTW- Go Blackhawks.

    Re: Check engine light on.

Well, I just picked my car up from the dealer. It was code-P0451 (fuel tank pressure sensor).

They replaced and everything is fine.
