Passport Radar Detector install

I got a hardwire kit for it. Keeping in mind that it has the "SmartCord" that allows you to mute it and I want to wire it neatly.
My first thought is to put the 'smart switch' inside the little pop open door mounted in the little tray next to the cigarette lighter plug in the bottom of the center dash console. That would put it neatly out of sight but accessible and run the wires discreetly in from behind it to some ignition key sensitive power source in the center dash console or behind it.
I do wonder how to get the end that plugs into my Passport to come out at the seam thats basicly in front of the windsheild mounted detector ? It is the seam is a few inches nearer to me than the defroster vent.
Is there a better way to run these or am I on the right track ?
Mark

Re: Passport Radar Detector install

Check in the cadillacfaqs. There is a write up on how to mount it by the rear view mirror and draw power from the interior lights or the power for the mirror, can't remember exactly which one. Here is a link to it http://www.cadillacfaq.com/faq/answers/v1install.html Just another idea, hope it can help.

Yeah, do that. Get rid of the smart thing.

I have an 8500 and after I wired mine I didnt miss the smart thing at all. Going through the power in the lights is very clean and easy.

Re: Passport Radar Detector install

Looks slick but I really dont want the light/display visible from behind on the road...then again in terms of theft it is out of sight walking by the car....decisions decisions....
The SmartCord is handy to shut down the occasional false beep though.........

Re: Passport Radar Detector install

this may sound dumb, but did you press the power button on the rear view mirror? that will turn the compass on.

i have the 8500 x50 also, i didnt hardwire it, but if this is easy enough i'll do it too. Would u mind taking pictures during the process & of the finished product and posting them here please? good luck

Re: Passport Radar Detector install

Sweet! First day on this forum after I just bought my CTS and already found something useful. You guys are great.

I have a Beltronics RX65 that I have to install and that faq describes an alternative install for that. In my other car I have the smartcord installed right above the steering column so it's easy to see when that red light goes off. (Useful if you listen to your music too loud). I think with the cleanliness of this install I might skip the smartcord though.
