2005 CTS Oil consumption

anyone having trouble with oil consumption. I have 37,000 miles. I currently have 15% oil life remaining before my next oil change. I've already added 4 quarts of oil. I have no leaks. Dealer tells me this is "normal". I can't believe it.

Re: 2005 CTS Oil consumption

Keep an eye on it. My 04 CTS 3.6 usually drinks an extra 2 quarts between changes; and I change mine every 5000 miles. Dealer said the same thing "normal"

I have an '05 with 34000 on it, and it doesn't drink a drop of oil. Your dealer's full of crap.

Re: 2005 CTS Oil consumption

My 04 3.6 does not use any oil. Print these out and show to service mgr. Also, ask for (GM) regional guy to get his input.

Re: 2005 CTS Oil consumption

My 2005 has 22,000 miles and has never used any oil. I change it once a year at approximately 7,500 miles which has never been less the 40% life remaining. I use Amsoil 0W-30 and the oil level never moves.

Are you using synthetic oil?

Which brand?

Some brands of oil will burn off (volatility) worse then others, try changing to another at next change to see if it improves.

Re: 2005 CTS Oil consumption

I have an '07 3.6 with 21,000 kms. Have changed the oil every 5000kms since new and have had to add at least 1 litre of oil between changes. My dealer also says this is not excessive. Waiting on the GM service rep to respond. Keep you posted.

Re: 2005 CTS Oil consumption

It has to do with the rings as they get dirtier. The Northstar is notorious for oil burning it is normal. But there are things you can do to avoid it.
1. Give your car some wide open throttle runs to clear the carbon buildup off the rings.
2. Take it to your mechanic and have them clean out the upper engine. (Not the fun way and it costs money)
3. CHANGE YOUR OIL MORE OFTEN. The sensor is for normal driving and on the gm website it says if you are in alot of stop and go driving you should still change your oil every 3000 miles or in dusty conditions.

Re: 2005 CTS Oil consumption

Ditto for that here fire. Mine spun the #3 rod bearing at 57K miles and Cadillac bought me a new crate motor. Search the forum for the story and the details.

Re: 2005 CTS Oil consumption

My 04 CTS 3.6 has 81000 miles on it and change the oil every 6000 miles. I am adding a quart of Mobil 1 at 3000 miles and was down a quart when I changed it recently. I know that FoMoCo claims that a quart every 1000 is considered "normal". (No Ford for me)

Re: 2005 CTS Oil consumption

yeah the dealer tried to tell me that it was my fault for not checking the oil... I had been right at the 3 k mark and they said i only had a quart left... no low oil indicator or anything..

they tried to talk me out of having them tear the bottom half out and have a gm rep come out because they said my warr. claim would "probably" be denied...

Guess who's car has a new motor??

Stupid dealer.... GM said replace it, no questions asked
