What do you guys recommend for shock replacements?

Remove this ad
I have a 05 CTS with 43,000 miles. My front end squeaks alot, Im pretty sure its my shocks (I thought it was the control arm bushings but my dealer said they were fine).

So my question is, can anyone recommend what I should get? Just go with the factory ones, or whats a good aftermarket one?

Re: What do you guys recommend for shock replacements?

if youre looking for a firmer ride you can upgrade to cts-v shocks. They show up sporadically on e-bay.

There is not much better than the OEM FE3 CTS Sport Shocks or the CTSV FE4 Sport Shocks.

Either one is ideal for the CTS's tuned sports suspension. If your at the point that you need to replace worn shocks; now would be a great time to upgrade to a set of the CTSV FE4 Shocks.

I have a complete brand new set of CTSV FE4 shocks that would fit your 2005 CTS and I would sell them cheaply.

If you find that you need new shocks and these will help you; feel free to email me; pietro@comcast.net

Re: What do you guys recommend for shock replacements?

Your shocks aren't going to be worn with ONLY 43k miles on them. Keep your money! My front end squeaks too, but I know the shocks aren't bad. If they were bad your car would be bouncing, which I highly doubt it's doing. Push down on the front of the car hard several times and suddenly stop. Does the car continue to bounce more than two times? if it does then the shocks are bad. if it's not, then they're fine. I have never had a vehicle need new suspension before 90,000 miles before ever. (even then they weren't THAT bad. at even 90k.)

Re: What do you guys recommend for shock replacements?

Ya on one of my hondas it would kinda squeak at times especially when it was cold outside and I had the bushings replaced and it all went away...course these two types of care are almost completely unrelated. I still think that its the bushings cause I am pretty sure the shocks wouldn't be doin that.

Well then....what exactly did the dealer tell you what the problem is?

Did he tell you it was the front struts?

Re: What do you guys recommend for shock replacements?

It's simple enough to put a little silicon based lube on the bushings to eliminate the possibility that your dealer has it wrong (not unusual).

There aren't a lot of choices for shocks/struts. KYB only lists them for the soft FE1 suspension. If you need them for FE2 or FE3 then the stockers are the only option I know of.

FE3 load-leveling rears are expensive. I know of one owner of a high mileage FE3 equipped car that opted to replace his load levelers with FE2 shocks to save himself some cash.

I believe the FE2 and FE3 fronts are the same. If I ever have to replace my FE2 fronts I will seriously consider going to FE4 (CTSV) struts as my stockers have always felt a little under damped.
