Black Pillars

Remove this ad
I'm one of those unfortunate souls that had the dreaded chrome pillars. The surgery to remove them was successful, but there is a little scarring of the originals left behind.

Does anyone know where I can get the original replacement pillars? What about black gloss pillars that would be applied like the chrome ones were? Has anyone seen those for an '05?

Thanks for the help. If it weren't for this forum, I'd still have the chrome pillars! I know someone can help me hide this light damage.

Use magic marker pen!
It's easy and cheap!

Re: Black Pillars

Haven't you ever seen those colored Sharpie commercials with the scratched paint in on the car, and he fixes it with the pen? Best..

Re: Black Pillars

I have the same problem. I think I may have scraped a lil too hard in some places when removing the chrome pillars! I would love the factory original pillars but if not I may try theses!

Re: Black Pillars

I saw those black pillars too, but they say CTS '06 and up. I assume they must not work for a 2005 like mine?

I used a flat-head screwdriver to pry up the corners then grabbed the pillar with pliers and pulled. I only had a hairdryer to heat it, and I don't think it was hot enough. One of them stuck half way down and I couldn't get it to pull off so I used the screwdriver to get past the stuck point. Apparently I wasn't gentle enough and nicked the paint in a few places, but it came off.

If I had it to do again I would have pried up the corner with the screwdriver carefully, pulled a little bit at a time and while using a hotter heat gun to heat it as I pulled. No screwdriver after the first corner.

Re: Black Pillars

That same part on my daughter's Saturn cost $33 and took an hour to replace, mainly because it's riveted in place. It had to be replaced because it's a thick glossy plastic material that cracked severely. In the case of the CTS, I think repainting is the way to go.

Re: Black Pillars

The Honda dealership scratched up the pillars on my wife's Accord & they had some specialist guy come in to repair them. From what I could tell it was just a low gloss flat black piece of vinyl they stuck on there & trimmed up real pretty. Ya might ask Gothica (member on here) about getting some vinyl pieces to cover the pillars. There's a good chance you could get them in gloss if that's what ya like.

When I took my pillars off & just parked my car outside & I waited until about 2 in the afternoon when the car was hot & then used a screwdriver to peel up one side & then they just came right off. I have heard of people sliding fishing line behind them & just sawing it back and forth as you pull down on it.

Mine had a couple small scratches when I took the chrome off. I used some buffing compound on them & then waxed the pipllars & you can't see the scratches uless you get right up to the car & look for them.

Re: Black Pillars

The "problem" is that it looks cheesy. I would buy those 94 dollar black ones if they made them for my SLS....

I flat black painted them and they look just ok - where the rest of the car is pristine. I may just pay a body shop.
