I checked out a windows media center; it is pretty awesome. You can customize it however you want, add lots of hard drive space. Problem is the video quality pales even in comparison to Comcast's POS Motorola box.

Until someone comes out with a decent video card for PVR, I am staying away from media center.

??? huh? I get full 1080p...well only 1080i to my tv since I use an Xbox360...but still, what card are you talking about the output video, or cable in?....cause the vid quality out of my box is stellar.

maybe they have gotten better, I dont know; the last time i looked at a media center was a years ago, and the cheapest was $2000. I am not talking a media center pc mind you, but a full fledged media center. the HD output was ok (but lots of artifacts), but the analog channels looked like garbage.

but, that was a while ago, maybe I need to give them another look. Still, more than I am willing to spend right now.

yes, but! There only giving cable card capability to OEM and I'm not shelling out the money they want for one of those things......and jimmy, as for $$$ initial cost, it can be steep...but chances are you current PC will handle at least MCE 2005....if it can handle vista, even better...otherwise your only startup costs are the Media center remote ~40$, tuner cards...I have two...one card is a single analog tuner, the other card is a analog tuner and a digital tuner (hd)....that was about 160$ for both...and then you have to buy Vista...I forget how much it is...you can go bootleg if you want, but good luck...this is the first OS I've bought......but basically if you need to build the computer too, I'd say startup costs will be ~1000$....and you don't need to another monitor because your using your TV.....if you ever tried it you'd be hooked.....pulling XM radio over the internet on my surround sound during a party is just one of the cool things or you can download porn and watch it on your 60" Sony

oh and I get 1080p over the air...but I watch all my tv through my Xbox360 (the older one w/out HDMI) so I'm stuck with component output at 1080i I can't really tell the difference anyways.

believe me, I so want to build an MCE box. I have MCE 05. I had a chassis and a QAM card. I put it together, just never got around to setting it up and playing with it. I wound up selling the the QAM card and 500gig HD, and giving the computer to someone as a reg computer. I just dont have the time right now with 2 kids to figure it all out.
