Brake Pads -Ferro Carbon v. Ceramic

Remove this ad
I purchased another set of Hawk Ceramic pads on line. Vendor sent me ferro carbon pads instead. I am sending them back, but they are charging me a 20% restocking fee (about 30 bucks)...anyway, anyone ever used ferro carbon and should I keep them or send them back. I've only used Hawk ceramic since I upgraded my brakes and kinda got used to the low dust...Any input on fero-carbon v. ceramic would be appreciated.

Keep them. We run ferro carbon HPS pads on the CTS. They're great. Very low dust, and they hold up well too, even under high performance driving.

PJ...are they the Hawk HPS pads? If so....keep them. Ceramic pads are more aggressive on rotors that have not been cryo treated. The Hawk HPS pads produce "a little" more dust than the ceramic versions, but it's negligible. The Hawk ceramic pads are virtually dustless, but far more aggresive on the rotor cheeks. They will stand up much better on cryo treated rotors, but will wear more agressively on non-cryo treated rotor cheeks.

Paul,
Curious how many miles did you get on your Hawk ceramics? Rotor surface still look good?

Did they screw up the order or did you order the wrong pads? If they screwed up you shouldn't have to pay.

Re: Brake Pads -Ferro Carbon v. Ceramic

pfft, keep the ferro carbon. they will dust a little more but they have better grip when the rotor is cold or when its wet out.

if there is no price difference that is.. if the ferro sell for more then keep them, if the ceramics sell for more tell them that you are keeping the ferro and for them to give you the price difference (that restocking fee sucks and it should not apply to mistakes in shipping)

Re: Brake Pads -Ferro Carbon v. Ceramic

Keep the Ferro-Carbons. They're a fantastic pad! Stop well, low dusting, and gentle on the rotors. Ceramics are a very hard pad, low dust and long wear but they're hard on the rotors which wear faster than normal.

Wassup Pete? Hope all is well...They are Hawk HPS. My rotors were cryo treated so I could keep running Hawk ceramics...

Don't know how many miles I got out of this set, but I know I've had them for a while...Rotor surface still looks good..As far as the order, I ordered ceramic, but buybrakes.com claim they only had ferro carbon listed on their website. The part number on the website did not have the "Z" for ceramic, or "F" for ferro carbon, so it will be hard to dispute. I used a credit card and was about to ship them back on Monday and eat the restocking fee, but after reading the comments on the board I'll keep them. Tire Rack is now sending me a replacement set of Hawk ceramic pads, so I guess I'll keep those also. I'll need them eventually.
