    Cadillac VS Ferrari

Was looking through a Car & Driver magazine and noticed that the 40-60 mph time of a '67 Ferrari 330/GTC was only 2/10th of one second faster than a '64 Cadillac Sedan de Ville that Car Life magazine tested.

    Here are the actual specs.
(Car & Driver, July, 1967 and Car Life, July, 1964)

    ----------------------- '67 Ferrari-------- '64 Cadillac
    Engine/horsepower----- 242 V-12/300----- 429 V-8/340
    Torque---------------- N.A.-------------- 480 lbs-ft
    Compression ratio------ 8.8:1------------- 10.5:1
Carburetor------------- 3x2 bbl Weber---- 1x4 bbl
Transmission type------ 5-speed manual-- 3-speed automatic
    Axle ratio-------------- 3.44:1----------- 3.21:1
Curb weight------------ 3,160 lbs-------- 4,900 lbs
    Wheelbase------------- 94.4"------------ 129.5"
    Overall length---------- 177.4"----------- 223.5"

    0-30 mph-------------- 2.2 secs--------- 3.4 secs
    0-60 mph-------------- 6.8 ------------- 8.5
    0-80 mph-------------- 11.3------------- 14.1
    0-100 mph------------- 16.7------------- 23.5

    1/4 mile---------------- 15.1 sec @ 96 mph- 16.4 sec @ 86 mph

    Passing:40-60 mph----- 3.5 secs--------- 3.7 secs
    ------- 50-70 mph----- 4.1-------------- 4.5
    ------- 30-70 mph----- 6.7-------------- 7.6
    ------- 60-100 mph---- 9.9-------------- 15.0

Fuel mileage----------- 12-15 mpg------- 9-12 mpg

    ------------------------

This does prove that once the weight of a Cadillac is overcome (once rolling), they have good passing times.

60 -100 mph big difference. It is like comparing apples to oranges.

It is and apples to oranges comparison, but I would think that the Ferrari would be more than 0.2 seconds faster from 40-60 mph than a big, heavy Cadillac.

Car and Driver uses fifth gear only for the passing test, the Cadillac is an auto and is allowed to downshift. One of the main reasons for the small difference in lower speeds

They do that now ("passing times, top gear") but I don't think they did it in the '60s because they wanted to the best time(s) possible.
