I actually think the M3 vs the CTS-V is the only legitimate comparison now. Any benefits (fun alternatives) the M5 has over the V, the M3 has as well, like the dual clutch trans and hi revving engine, but has sharper handling. The E60's V10 doesnt sound as good as the E90's V8, imo, and thats important to me. The M5 costs a lot more, as well and doesn't corner like the M3 does. Since the CTS-V matches the M5 in every way except for technical bragging rights, the M5 seems kind of redundant.

For argument purposes, the M3 beats the M5 around the Top Gear test track by .9 seconds.

How did the E60 M5 and E39 M5 compare to the new M3 or CTS-V at VIR?

What disappoints about the M3 when I got the chance to test drive one, is the piss poor amount of torque. Only fun I had was over 6K rpms. The CTS V fixes that problem for me. I like a flat as hell torque curve. Not one where I have to wring it out.

I prefer the pushrod tq as well, but an M3 is still an exhilarating drive.

    Re: Comparison with M3?

What does the C62 offer that the V doesn't...smaller size? Every hardcore review Ive seen says its a bit of a pig on track. If Im gonna go smaller then the V, give me an M3.

What I cant understand is why in America, there seams to be alot of financial isses and unemplyment, yet the true blue American would still by a foreign product? And continue to complain about the state of the economy and country.
I bought a Caddy, so dont take this the wrong way. There are some things that the germans simply do better then us americans and vica versa. The m3 is an incredibly great car, its hybrid of handling and power + performance and refinement is almost unrivaled.

Also, i havent encountered a company, including GM that can produce the balance between ride quality and comfort that BMW consistently produce. BMWs simply have sublime handling. The m3 looks pretty ****ing sweet too.

That being said, the CTS-V would whip it around any track i can think of. It may not be able to transition as nimbly as the m3, but is nearly as capable around turns if driven carefully and far more potent in a straight line. Mix the V's performance with its sharp exterior styling and BMW beating interior, the V is a better deal in my eyes.

Dont slight a person who buys a foreign car, the germans really do make cars the right way, and have until very recently (with the release of the CTS-V) set the standard in the midsize sedan market.

Buying a car just because its American, and may help the failing domestic automakers make a dime isnt the only thing that should be considered when buying a car.

    Re: Comparison with M3?

The only part of the track that the M3 exceeds the CTS-V is the slalom course, because the M3 is 11 inches shorter. Even still, its not much faster through the cones.

    Re: Comparison with M3?

According to what I read the M3 stops from 60-0 in 113ft, while the CTS-V does the same in 109ft.

    E46 stops in 115ft.
