98 Catera Won't Start

I have a 1998 Catera that was a very good running car until one day it decided that it did not want to start so I brought it to my local mechanic who told me the it was the Engine Computer. So we replaced that and flashed the computer now it just turns over but does not fire up. He said that the fuel pump is not getting any power but he doesn't seem to be to interested in searching for the problem so any information on this would be great as I miss driving my car. Thanks

Re: 98 Catera Won't Start

Dont let him near your car again......he hasn't a clue what hes doing!

Never yet seen a true ECU failure!

The favourite is the crank sensor, without a signal from this the ECU shuts off the injectors and ignition.....but, reading the stored fault codes will reveal all....

I would fit the old ecu back in as its a known quantity....not sureif it applies to the Catera but, the Omega requires the ECU programming to the immobiliser system or it wont start....

Re: 98 Catera Won't Start

I don't know if this would help, but just recently, during the cold weather, my 97 Cat would not start. It's like the immobilizer just cut off the ignition, the starter won't even turn. And the solution i found out was to hold the ignition key turned all the way for a minute or so, then after a while, the car will start. I don't know what causes it, but it's very possible that the cold weather caused it. I don't know what the holding of the ignition key turned all the way did, i guess it heated up something that eventually started the car. But it did the trick.
