grinding noise in rear while turning

i have a 97 cadillac catera with 87,000 miles on it. just recently i noticed a grinding noise coming from the rear on my car only when i turning. If i turn
lightly, the sound can not be heard. BUt only when i turn kind of quick do you hear ther noise. The noise then goes away as i drive straight. Does anyone
have any idea what this could be????

To be a little more specific with my above post, the noise seems to be coming from the rear wheels. But again, the grinding noise can only be heard when turning hard.

Just a guess. Could be one or more CV joints on the rear axles, or bad wheel bearings. Just hope it isn't the differential. Has the rear end oil been changed in those 87,000 miles?

I really couldnt tell you if the rear end oil has been changed or not. How can i go about checking this???? i actually
just purchased to car a couple months ago and this is the first problem i have ran into. Other then that the car runs good. The only reason i even heard the grinding was because i was in a parking lot and made a turn goin quicker then i usually do. It grinded throughout the whole turn from which it sounded like it was coming from both wheels but i could be wrong..

Before you take the shotgun approach, take your rear wheels off and look for anything unusual. If nothing seems obvious bring the car to a mechanic for a diagnosis. Changing the diff lube is a good idea but it might not fix your problem. Follow the link below and the procedure is nicely explained by "Marks DTM Calib". He says the diff is Sealed For Life but I can't accept that. My Cat Sport had 53,000 miles. Slowly but surely I'm having all the fluids replaced. The diff is still on the "to do list" along with brake fluid. It's too cold to lay on the garage floor right now.

I actualy suspect a rear wheel bearing to be at fault....but, always check for foreign items in the brake assemblies etc

Jack each wheel in turn and try to move them by grabbing the tyre at the 12 and 6 Oclock position and then repet at the 3 adn 9 Oclock positions....if there is any play then wheel bearing is a fair bet. Alternatively place a listening stick on the hub of each wheel with the other end on the bone just below you ear and spin the wheel....listen for any grinding or loud whirring...

Never know a Cat suffer from diff failure and wheel bearing failure is rare to....but as Sherlock Holmes used to say, 'when you have excluded the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth'

Thanks for all the help. I will check out to see if my wheel has any play in it as soon as i get a chance. I will also make sure i put aside some time to do a diff oil change. Whats weird about it is i only hear it every once in a while. If doing these thing doesn't work, i will be sure to get it checked out.
