just wondering if it was even an option for a 5-spd (O/D) auto trans option over in europe-land...i like the 4spd's ratios, but it would be nice to also have an over-drive gear for better mileage during extended steady-state highway cruising...we have alot of territory to cover over here in the States to get anywhere!

The 4L30E in our cars already does have an overdrive gear.

3rd.....1.00
4th.....0.73

Newer 5L40E (CTS, 2002 European Omega, 3 series BMW, et al)

1....3.42
2....2.21
3....1.60
4.....1.00
5.....0.75

Re: opel/vauxhall omega-B owners: was there ever a 5-spd auto tranny available?

As already said, there is already an overdrive on the 4 speed.

In answer to the 5 speed questiona dn contary to the above....there was NEVER a 5 speed fitted to the Omega, there was one planned for the updated straight six common rail BMW sourced diesel but, this was never released.

Reality is that extra cogs are only realy required if you have a less than ideal torque curve (which is peaky) like you get with the modern over turboed diesel engines....

You could always request a import using car parts location service such as CarSpareFinder. They do vauxhall parts and vauxhall spare parts, so you can save money by getting a second hand one.

being vauxhall i would not be surprised to find one, they release great vauxhall car parts, including my favorite, the ipod doc.

Not a great deal of use as Vx/opel no longer sell a rear wheel drive vehicle and as stated, the Omega (which was the last rear wheel drive car they did with an auto) never had a 5 speed tranny fitted...

I get great highway mileage on my '97, almost always approaching 30 mpg. It's the around town driving that is a killer. In pure around town, I may get as little as 16 mpg.

Re: opel/vauxhall omega-B owners: was there ever a 5-spd auto tranny available?

It should be about 3000rpm at 75-80mph on the auto 3.0V6....which is about the optimum on a multivalve engine....

Interestingly, not sure how good your dealers are but, there was a software update for the gearbox ECU around 2002 which can be progarmmed into pretty much all post 98 cars via TECH2 and TIS.......and it makes a BIG difference to the changes....much smoother and considerably better when booting it...

I personaly no longer have an auto as I prefer a car with a 'driver involvement pack' (Manual gearbox) so I can throw it round corners more....
