Vibrations at 50 mph

Remove this ad
I own a 99 catera sport and I'm getting worried about the way my car has been acting. Whenever I drive about 50 mph, the car shakes. It has about 100,000 miles so I know things are bound to break down. I know a repair at the dealer will be expensive, so I'm trying to get a warning about what this problem is. Any ideas? How expensive to fix?

Re: Vibrations at 50 mph

Likely alignment or tire balance. I'd start with the tires. You may have just thrown a rim weight off. If the vibration started happen suddenly, this is the likely cause unless you hit a curb hard in the same time frame. A tire rotation + rebalance shouldn't be all the expensive. (This cured my vibration, although slight, at ~75MPH) If all the tires checkout, alignment would be the next thing to try. Sears does alignments pretty cheap and that is where I had my Cat aligned last time. I think it was ~$80. They may also do tire rotations + balancing there as well.

Re: Vibrations at 50 mph

As suggested, I would start with the wheel balance, alignment will hardly ever create a vibration.

Re: Vibrations at 50 mph

Do you get any shaking during braking? If so, consider front rotors. Caddy's in general have a tendency to warp them due to weight issues.

Re your problem I agree with the above posters and really can add little. You should be able to sort things out by following their wise counsel.

Just wanted to bow down, though, and pay proper homage to your ownership of the rarest Catera of all, the '99 Sport.

There is a really good reason so few '99 Sport owners post in this forum:

It's because there are so few '99 Cat Sports out there.

And that's because so few were manufactured.

Congratulations on owning a very special car! Properly cared for, your car is destined some day to become a collector's item, IMHO.

As a lucky '99 Sport owner, you might find this thread from our archives to be of interest:

And finally, on behalf of all the men in this group who would give their next paycheck to meet a woman driving a gorgeous 1999 Catera Sport, and in consideration of the proximity of Valentine's Day, please accept as our gift some free chocolate to be picked up prior to March 3rd at your local Target. Just, please, do not get chocolate on those special, exceptional leather seats. One of us might some day want to buy your car:

Re: Vibrations at 50 mph

Guardian: You crack me up... lol

Silvergirl: I had the same problem with my 2000 Cat. Around 48-53mph slight shake coming from the front end. When breaking, there were vibrations felt through break pedal. New rotors and a proper rotation/balance/allignment check cleared it all up for me.
