I get a marble sound coming from the engine, it sounds like the intake??? or a rattle in the cat convertor. I'm new to this engine and vehicle. Car has 22K miles, bought it with bent valves etc. all back togther set timing belt up with the Kent Moore tools, it runs perfect except the noise on acceleration from a stop, it goes away or is not audible once it's in 4th. ...I have no other Caterea to compare it too. What is a typical Catera sound like on acceleration????Give a wrench a hand. thanks Frank
Frank, you said it sounds like, "marbles?" That's a new one but not surprising. What year is your Cat? And it has 22,000 miles? Is that correct? The converter theory is interesting though. I had a 'Vette whose converter broke up into pieces when it was only 4 years old so that IS a possiblity. It sounded like rocks in the pipes when I started it up, at idle & low rpm's. In fact, it WAS, "rocks;" the converter broke up into pieces. I took it to a muffler shop and as soon as they unbolted the converter, the, "rocks," fell out. I replaced it and it's been fine since then.

Shaker, thanks for the reply, it almost sounds like spark knock but I have no codes, my xray scanner does not support the KS....., I all most now think its in the timing belt area??? all of that is new and set up perfectly...what does your engine sound like on take off ???
Well, it USED to sound great but just found out about an hour ao that my engine is blown; however, when it was good it sounded great. Definitely no marble sounds. I do know one thing for sure: if you re-build one of these motors, setting the timing correctly on the cams is critical.

I agree, the timing on the cams is dead on, I had access to the Kent Moore tools, plus I ordered one of the tool set up kits....just for a back up. If your keeping the car they have engines on ebay new for $1500. By the time you do the heads and gaskets you'll have $1200 in it, I know this for sure, I did the heads (6 bent valves), oil cooler, all rollers and tensioner etc. and I have about $1200. in it. I would say it's less labor intensive to change out the engine then RR the heads. I did not skimp as the car had 21K on it...I'm going to peek in again at the T belt for the second time, possibly a new roller is noisy???

I agree totally but who in this group is unaware of this. It's not possible to know with certainty , over the net, what is causing a "marbles" sound. For sure I hope it's exhaust.
And I do not want to anger you or antagonize you but I'll tell you regardless what's in my gut:
I have concerns re timing, or something else related to your rebuild, and especially because it smooths out up top. NO disrespect intended here and your use of the proper tool is acknowledged. Just please be really, really sure the cam timing is spot on. There is no penalty for triple checking. Nobody here will know.
Because you just rebuilt and then reassembled your engine and now it is making an odd noise. There has to be at least some suspicion re cause and effect.

Good luck!!
I never heard the engine run before I bought it, I bought it damaged with the bent valves so I have nothing to compare it to, the engine runs perfectly in all speed ranges except for a low subtle noise on light accelerration. I may be doing over kill but I annoys me, otherwise it is perfect.. The cam timing is spot on, no concerns there.
Fisrt....pop the aux belt off (make sure its clear of the crank pulley) re-start and see if it goes away....dont run it for to long though as the water pump is not running....
What area of the engine is the noise coming from....?

that was one of the first things I did, no change, however I did not drive it with a load on it, and power braking wont produce the noise. My first thought was the noise was designed in it with the elaborate induction system to produce a raspy performance sound...at times it almost sounds like bearings, but I have good oil pressure etc. and no other noise, ever. You can only hear it under acceleration from a stop light or climbing a small hill. Once it's in 4th OD it's quiet as a mouse. I cant duplicate the noise in Park, I do get a bit of a whir noise from the T belt area just off idle, again all new rollers etc. At one point I thought it was spark knock, no change with different grades of fuel, even checked the plug wires, all OK, no codes ever...I had a Porsche 968 and if the balance shaft belt was too tight it made a similar whirring noise. I wish I could hear another car..I'll keep my eye open for another vehicle and talk to the owner. Any thoughts are appreciated.
