Question 2000 Catera starts fine, then shuts right off?

Hello, does anyone know what this problem is? We had to get it towed today. This happened to me 2 times before when I got in the car turned it on and it turned right off. But then it just started right back up again and was ok, that was 2 months ago. This time it started right up and sounds good, then turns right off. We tried numerous times before calling a tow. same thing over and over. Any ideas?? Thanks for the help!!

Check all the fuses. I just fixed a '94 Camaro and the fuel pump had gone bad. Also check the Mass Air Flow sensor.

Re: 2000 Catera starts fine, then shuts right off?

Hi, thanks for the reply. I just got in touch with my brother and he said the transponder in the key in these cars go bad, etc. I told my husband and yep, he said the key broke today, and the transponder fell out, so thats the problem. He said we need to find it and tape it to the steering column until we get a new key, but I think its long gone. I called the dealer and they said if we dont have a key to program it from its going to run about 500.00..OMG!! Suks to be us now. Thanks for the help. maybe this can help someone in the future.

Jamsmcgee, what transponder are you reffering to?

I would just buy an ignition with key from a used auto parts place.

Hmm... sounds more like it's the very common "Crankshaft position sensor" malfunction. A pretty cheap fix! Lots of information on here about that.

Check and/or replace your fuel filter.
