Problem putting gas in tank

Remove this ad
Whenever I gas up my Cat I have to manually control the fill rate. The fill pipe very easily overflows. I cannot set the latch on the hose handle to automatically run as it will kick off when the fill tube backs up.
Anyone else experience this and what might be the cause?
Thanks

Re: Problem putting gas in tank

Pulling the nozzle out almost all the way and manually holding the flow to the minimum is the only way to get it to fill. I assumed it was something to do with the vent. Even dropped the tank, but the whole fill tube assembly is in a metal casing welded to the tank. Is there a vent tube elsewhere?

Re: Problem putting gas in tank

My wifes '01 is doing something similar. It shuts the hose off after only 10 gallons so we can only fill it up that much. I'll try next time to sloooowly fill it after the pump first shuts off. What a pain.

Exact same thing here. Do not feel bad. I have put almost 5,000 miles on this thing in a little over a month and this is the one thing that is pissing me off. I still have never actually filled the tank up all the way, at least I do not think I have.

Re: Problem putting gas in tank

There was along discussion about this in the forum a few months back... something about the shape of the fill pipe versus the type - angle of North American fuel filling nozzles... versus Europeen fille nozzles.

You have to turn the fill nozzle an certain way and not completly in.... or something. I don't have the issue as most gas stations I frequent don't have the automatic clicker on their fill nozzles.

I'll try that next fill up, I had an Alfa 164L that I had to rotate the nozzle to the 9:00 position in order to fill it.

That is exactly what I tried after I read Resilient's post. I got to about two gallons short and had to play with it a bit but I rather due it for a minute then the whole time.
