VSS 'a' malfunct. and EBTCM

Remove this ad
Hi Guy's

First, a happy and healthy new year to one and all.

My ongoing EBTCM issue is starting to feel more than a little annoying!!

As BORIS suggested, I retraced back the remote starter fitment, the brain for that was removed and it made no difference at all, so that has helped narrow it down a bit, thanks Boris.

The reconditioned EBTCM has stopped throwing up codes (CEL ones) and the code coming up now is as follow's;

0500 - VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR A MALFUNCTION

My question, where is 'A' and anyone have an idea of cost etc, or whether it is likely that it could be the culprit behind the problems I now have.

I will go grab one and fit it, if it makes sense.

Thanks All.

Mick

Re: VSS 'a' malfunct. and EBTCM

Thanks Contour!!

Ironically the vehicle had the back brakes done just prior to the onset of this problem, I wonder!! Not to ask a totally ignorant question, but what should I actually look for in terms of the rear sensor?

Having had the EBTCM done, I am loathe to purchase a VSS before I know if its actually required!!

Coincidentally, and it may be just that, I have developed a strange braking problem, if I apply much pressure, the car shifts sideways and back and the steering wheel kicks. My understanding being that if I don't have the ABS running, it would brake as normal, just that the anti-lock would not function, makes me wonder if the ABS has partial activity.

Snow (a little bit) arrived today, and the combination of rear wheel drive, no tracs or abs is making life a little exciting!!

Anybody else seen any of the above?

Re: VSS 'a' malfunct. and EBTCM

I too have the EBTCM problem. It first showed up after I had the engine replaced. The mechanic sid ti was probably the VSS.
I bought one off eBay, not too expensive. Is fairly simple to install.
The VSS is located on the transmission, a little high on the drivers side. It's held on with a single bolt. Carefully remove the connector, remove the bolt and carefully pry it out. It has an "O" ring seal so may need to work it a bit.
I had to jack up the drivers side of the car to get under, but it was fairly straight forward.
BTW it didn't help with my EBTCM problem and I am now looking into one of the 2 rebuild offers on eBay.
Good luck.
